So, just to update this thread, I decided to pass on the 5th wheel I mentioned. I got my neighbor who works for DOT to weigh my truck with his scales and with a Reese 5th wheel hitch in the bed, a half tank of gas, and maybe a couple hundred pounds of junk in my toolbox, my truck's curb weight is 8,300#!! I never would have imagined that truck weighed that much. I estimate the 5th wheel has a pin weight of 2,100# or more. I would still be under the max rear axle weight by about 450# but I would be over the 10,000# gross vehicle weight by about 400#. And that's not counting passengers so that would probably be closer to 1,000#. I don't really care about the payload that much but I feel like I would be riding right on the ragged edge of the trucks capabilities as far as GAWR and GVWR.

I've got a 2021 2500 4x4 Laramie with the 6.7. I use it to tow a roughly 9,000# TT and it pulls it like a champ. My truck has the 5th wheel/gooseneck prep package and I've thought about switching to a 5th wheel but payload is what concerns me. The Ram website lists my truck's towing capacity at 16,780# but payload capacity as 2097#. I figure once you add a full load of fuel, 4 people in the cab, and whatever else, I really only have about half of that left. Does anyone tow a 5th wheel with their 2500? And if so, what is the weight (or more specifically, pin weight) of the camper?
I have a 2017 Forest River Wildcat 38MBX 5th Wheel being towed with our 15 RAM 2500HD 4dr. 4x4 6.4' bed 6.7L Cummins, towing cap. its 17,510lbs, GCWR: 25,300lbs. On average pin weight is 10% of the overall weight of 5th wheel. Our pin weight is around 1,200lbs. We use a Anderson Hitch. 5th wheel fully loaded is 13,609lbs, 41.5' long w/4slides. We even did a CAT scale while traveling from FL to NY this past spring and we came in just over 23k pounds fully loaded.

Most new 5th wheels around 38+ feet are over weight when it comes to the PIN weight for 2500 trucks.

We are looking into the possibility of switching to a park model pull behind camper since hitch weight is lower than that of a 5th wheel. Like this model for example: Forest River Sierra Destination 400BH. We live full-time in our 5th wheel currently in a year round rv cmapground.
