I had a difficult time deciding between the 5.7 and 6.4. Besides the added power gains, what sold me on the 6.4 was the MDS and the fact it's designed to be a true truck motor. The 5.7 is basically swapped between the 300, grand Cherokee, 1500, etc. I love my 6.4 and no regrets. It gets 12 mpg in town, but i didnt buy it for that. The only issue I've had was a bad fan clutch from day one.
Power is noticeably better than the 5.7s I drove and mileage is close to same.
I strongly feel that a programmer/tuner will really wake the 6.4 up. It runs very strong from the factory, but my gut tells me it's been detuned.

The history of the 5.7 is it started as a truck motor and they seen the versatility in other platforms. Going from a 5.7 2500 to a 6.4 2500, the only I gained was less MPG. Power feels about the same but I went from 13-14mpg to 11 with the 6.4.

I have a 2015 RAM 6.4 3.73 with about 33K on it, so far no major problems, I did have to have 3rd brake light replaced due to a severe leak, but they did it quickly with no fuss.

Otherwise it's been pretty good, I have averaged as high as 19.2 mpg by EVIC FL to WV taking it easy and at least on the east side of the country it's more than capable in the Appalachians towing up to 10K or so which is the heaviest I have towed though at points at 7MPG.

Overall been happy with it, hopefully your experiences are the same.

That's good to hear they have a fix for it now. I had one of the very early 2014 6.4 Hemi and my dealer pretty threw their arms up in confusion and didn't know what to do. A $5 roll of rubber weather-stripping and 5 minutes in the Home Depot parking lot and it's never leaked a drop since. I think it's mostly a problem for people that park outside and with the truck on an up slope (water runs off the back of the cab over the top of the light). The "gasket" they put in at the factory is a joke. It's not even remotely waterproof or thick enough.

Given the 6.4 motor and 4.10 rear axle...what's the tow rating of your truck? Thinking about getting a 2500.

Traded my 2015 1500 for 2018 2500 cc big horn. Averaged 17.9 miles a gallon. Removed the wheels and cleaned them up and painted the calipers. Installed the wheels and now the TPMS sensors says I've got a low tire pressure. Making a appointment for the dealership tomorrow. Can't wait to pull our Lance 2375 camper across country with this beast 62ae8be137f123119bad16fa67249d43.jpg

6.7 CTD
Hey all,

I'm looking for any 6.4 owners that have or will be soon towing. Within the next 3-4 months I'll be getting a new rig and I'm trying to decide between the 6.4 Hemi or the 6.7 CTD (never owned a diesel, just gassers) in a 2500 CC Longhorn (MC too big for garage ). Doing my due diligence now to avoid regrets later.

The MAIN use of the truck will be getting me to and from work. 3-4 times per week/40 mi round trip. City driving mostly (suburbia MN).

As a secondary use, we just recently bough a 29ft travel trailer (just under 10k lbs), and my '01 Silvy 1500 just isn't cutting it. We will probably be pulling the trailer 10-12 times per season, mostly within the state with 1 or 2 big trips out west.

So, looking to get info from 6.4 guys…or CTD guys on their thoughts/advice. Do I go with the Hemi or the Cummins? I know there is A LOT of information…and bias...out there, but I thought I would start here. Any help/info/advice you can send this way is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Never owned a Cummins. I have owned several Powerstrokes. Take care of a diesel and it will take care of you - I never had any failures on my Powerstrokes.

That said, this comes down to a few factors. The 6.4 is very capable, and I use it to tow a TT about the size of yours with my Wagon. It gets up and moves quite well. Sucks down the gas though. Empty I average 16 summer, 13-14 winter. If you don't plan on going much heavier with a camper (you can get 36' fifth wheels that only weigh 10k), the 6.4 would be plenty for you.

You'll get better mileage with a diesel, both pulling and empty, though. It comes with the higher cost of diesel, and the added cost of DEF (unless you tune that out). You'll be able to pull anything you want, but diesels do NOT like short trips on a regular basis. They need to run for 15-20 minutes to keep them pretty clean. This can also be an issue with the catalytic converter on a gas truck, but it's much worse in a diesel.

In the end it comes down to things like these...and your personal preference. Do you want to sound like a big rig, or a Hemi?
