Hello, i just purchased a 2019 2500 with the 6 4 hemi. I havr about 3600 miles on it so far. For some reason it seems to take an unusal amount of cranking to get it started sometimes. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is it normal for the 6.4 to take a little extra time to turn over?

Hey Tim
I had CTD trucks for years, but on my second 6.4 truck in a row now. Both trucks have utilized tip start and even on the coldest of Winter mornings the 6.4s have fired up within 2 1/2 seconds to the best of my recollection. Let us know how you come out with this issue.

Added: Might try ensuring the transfer pump in the gas tank has fully pressurized the system prior to tip starting the engine. Transfer pump will cycle off when pre-pressure condition is reached. Is just a thought

Hi Timdollins,

We understand why this may be concerning. We suggest having your dealer inspect this concern if you have not done so already. We are also available via private message if you would like any additional assistance during that process.

Weak battery maybe? Just a thought. When I had a 6.4L, it always turned over quickly .... until the battery started going. Then there would be occasional long cranks, until one day I got a check engine light at the gas pump. When I stopped by the auto parts store to get it read, they said voltage issue. Was gonna leave to take it to the dealer for full diagnosis but truck wouldn't start. They tested the battery and it was doa; new battery in, CEL gone and truck turned right over, no more long cranks until the day I traded it.

I would tend to agree with @ETX Ram in regards to the possibility of the fuel system not holding pressure. Does it only happen after sitting for a while? If you start it and let it run for 10 seconds, then shut down and immediately restart, does it start right up or still crank excessively. My old boat's fuel system would lose pressure over night. If I would turn the key to run (not start) and let the fuel pump charge the system, it started fine, if I just immediately tried to start it, it would crank for a bit until the fuel pump built up enough pressure to push past the injectors. Since it's so new I'd bring that baby in. My 2014 6.4 pretty much started running after the first piston fired.

It dosent seem to matter how long it sits. I dont think it would be the battery? Its a brand new truck...ill check it anyway though1
