I'm looking at a 2006 Ram 3500 dually and the owner states it's an 8 cyl. I ran the VIN and it shows
as a 6 cylinder. With the 3.73 axle, will this truck tow 14,500 lbs?

I can't find the towing capacity anywhere. VIN 3D7MX48C56G250153

Thanks for your help.

It is probably the 6 cylinder cummins. Haven't heard of a 6 gas in a 3500 for many years.

I have a 14,500 lbs 5er. I can't find the towing capacity anywhere. This has the 3.73 axle. Do you think this truck will tow my RV? THanks for your help.

If it's a diesel, probably. I would be more worried about it being a 12 year old diesel with who knows how many miles and what type of maintenance was done. If someone buys a diesel Cummins, they usually USED it for it's purpose and that was to haul and work hard.

It's got 181k on it and the trans was completely rebuilt. Very well cared for so I'm considering it. Not a scratch on it.

Assuming it's a Cummins, it'll pull it. More cylinders is not always better. Bear in mind the semis you see rolling down the road are powered by straight-six diesel engines.

The 8th digit on the VIN is "C". That indicates the truck came with a 5.9l High output, 6 cylinder Cummins diesel. If the current owner says it has an 8 cylinder, I would be concerned and he's most likely clueless.

The one ton cummins diesels have always been on top as far as i know. Ive only recently become a dodge fan, so i'm not biased. Their power and pulling power is legendary. I always said cummins can do more with 6 cylinders than the others can with 8. (Diesels of course, not gas.)

That truck is equipped with the 5.9L Cummins 6 cylinder diesel engine. As long as it was maintained properly, it still has some miles left in it.

I pulled the build sheet on the truck and it is attached to this reply.

As far as what that truck will tow, it all depends on total weight of the truck loaded (Gross Vehicle Weight) + the total weight of the trailer loaded (Gross Vehicle Weight), compared to the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating (GCVWR) of the truck.

Your truck has a sticker on the door jamb that shows the truck's GCVWR, i.e., the totally loaded, hooked up to towed vehicle, weight rating of the truck. You'll need that number.

Here are the specs on that truck:

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating = 11,547 (weight of truck, passengers, gear, etc... trailer pin weight)

Towing Capacity = 15,400

Dry weight = 6,876

Payload = 4,671

Your truck weighs about 6876 pounds without anything in it. The truck's payload rating, i.e. things that you haul in the truck, is 4671 pounds. So, add up the weight of fuel (6.9 pounds per gallon), passengers, gear, luggage, stuff in the bed like tool boxes, etc... + add 15 - 20 percent of your trailer's weight as a pin weight number and there you have the truck's actual Gross Vehicle Weight.

The owner doesn't know if it's a 6 or an 8? I'd be moving right on down the road. If the owner doesn't even know what engine is in it how do you know if he kept up with the maintenance or not?

some people pay other ppl to do all the work to there cars and no nothing other than put fuel in it. this is why certain garages try to do stuff we don't need done or overcharge for things. I see it all the time. paid 500 dollars labor to get a fan belt alt and belt tensioner put on in. I had no choice as the truck coasted into this garage after breaking on the road. I was beyond upset.
