Hi folks so im looking at picking up a new to me ram the one i am looking at has mostly everything i want except it has the 8.4 head unit (first world problems). looking at the dash it doesnt look like it would be an easy swap. the volume controls are below the screen and its much larger than a standard double din. now im not afraid of custom fab work. I put a nexus 7 tablet in my wrx and had it control everything from the ignition to the air suspension (and the stereo of course) from what i have found in searching it looks like behind that screen there is a pocket for a double din (these were pics of the 5.0 connect system but im guessing its all the same under the covers) my biggest concern is by removing this 8.4 am i loosing anything and is there an easy fix to filling in those controls that are below the screen? annoyed with how many systems are getting tied into the head units of newer vehicles (says the guy who tied his whole car into a tablet). Hopefully this makes sense i feel like put a lot of words here but not much substance....

Sorry it is a 2014 thanks for all the links ill look through them see if i can figure this out.

Edit: i went through i a couple of the links i think i may have miss worded my question. im looking for a way of ditching the 8.4 connect system in favor of an after market system but wanted to know if i would loose or break other systems in the truck by removing that.

Yes, you would loose all the configuration setting ability and some of the climate controls for the truck unless you get an aftermarket radio with iDatalink capability and get a Maestro (sp?) Datalink to go with it.

hmmm ill have to look into that to see if its worth it to me. Thanks for the info all.

edit: looking at idatalink's site there are two options for 8.4 one amplified one unamplifiied im guessing myn is the unamp'd as i dont think my stock system has a sub. or is that question for if im going to run amps afterward ?
