Hi all,
Wanna buy a 2013/14 Ram with 5.7 hemi, and comparing two options: 2013 with 65RFE (imported from Canada) and 2014 with 8HP70. In other forums I read that 8-speed gets better gas mileage, but looking at original stickers it’s actually the opposite. So what is it in reality? I trust the sticker info, but really seeing opposing opinions.B68AB458-56AB-411A-AD1E-AB69DFEF8766.pngEF070A84-624C-4AB1-ABE4-F5E3028CE5C6.png

Not enough difference to worry about
Compare other aspects of the trucks to make your decision. That window sticker is just a n average.
I've had 2-of many vehicles over the years. Same engine, same year, same transmission, same tire size, same driver and they are vastly different between them in how they act, mileage, what breaks on one that doesn't on the other, etc

The difference isn't enough to change from the 6 spd to the 8 spd just for fuel economy.
If you were looking at buying a truck, the 8 spd is a definitely in the plus column to buy over the 6 spd.

That's funny, they converted 10.8 l/100km to mpg wrong. It's not 26, it's 21.7 mpg.
@Dmitry_new actually it is 26 mpg if your using imperial gallons instead of US gallons.
Back when the EcoDiesel first came out, there was a large group of Canadians that were getting considerably better fuel economy than everyone else. Turn out they were using imperial gallons instead of US.
An imperial gallons is 4.55 litres, or 1.20 U.S. gallons

Get the truck that wasn't in Canada. That's the right answer anytime, regardless of options.

There's some pretty bad rust-belt trucks in the US too. Get the truck that spent as much time of its life as far south as possible.

We never use imperial gallons for MPG in Canada though. It's always in freedom units. Europe they use the British gallon.

Regardless of what the window stickers may show or however the math may be wrong there will always be variables that will affect the real numbers. Those numbers are calculated under the most perfect conditions that will rarely or never be seen in real world use. I wouldn't worry too much about the mpg's and get the truck you like

The wifes 2016 Challenger had both the US gallon and the Imperial gallon, plus the metric equivalent. There was a notiacable differance, lol

I love my 2013 Big Horn. Has the same specs as your Window sticker. Maybe someone can chime in, but I think the 2014 they moved to the dial shift? I like the floor shift better. Ultimately, it should come down to condition.

If you want gas mileage, get a 1500 with the electric motor and the V6. I borrowed my cousins brand new E Torque and did 2000 miles this summer. With the bed loaded with about 600 pounds of stuff, I averaged 24 mpg at 70mph! And wicked fast! Great truck!

If Ram improves its fleet CAFE by 0.5 mpg it is not trivial although it will be for the person who buys the truck. What you get with the 8-speed are two additional overdrive gears which help only when on level ground and no load in the bed or attached to the hitch.

I never reall looked close at those sheets, remember, Gallons in Ca are bigger than your wimpy US gallons
Rear end gears the same????
I have a 14 sport with the 8 sp 3.9 gears and love the thing, way better mileage them the 2010 Laramie that I had with same stuff, but the older transmission.
Really liked that, till some AH smashed it.
I just go by the read out , at my age , That is good enough for me.
I should still have the window sticker, I do have the build sheet still , scanned on to the computer I would buy the 8 speed really like that transmission, but just use as car these days 80KM only time in the garage, recalls, updates and oil change as I can't crawl under stuff any more, and no ramps left.

I have a 2014 1500 Big Horn with the 5.7 v8 and 8sp tranny. I’m looking to upgrade to a 2500. DM me if you are interested. I’m in CT, btw.

I'll put it this way. If you speed a lot, then the 8 speed might be better. On my truck once I get over 70-75, the RPMs climb and it isn't very fuel efficient. It's a truck though. I have a Dodge Charger if I want speed.

The turnoff for me would be 2014 is the first year they put the 8 speed in the RAM. Seems like any time they introduce a major change to the powertrain, you run a higher risk of encountering bugs. At this point the 6 speed has been around for awhile, so that was another reason why I went with a 2013.

I would make sure it had the 8 speed! The better transmission is the 8 speed by far! Don't even consider a 6 speed. I may be wrong, but I think by 2013 all 1500 were 8 speed. Go to the RAM web site and put in your VIN and that will tell you for sure.

Mid year 2013 they introduced the 8 speed in the higher trim trucks,it wasn't till 2015 that all trim lines in the US trucks started to get the 8 speed,in Canada the 6 speed was still used till either 20 or 21 in the lower trim level trucks.
