I judt did my first oil change on my 5.7.....Mother of God, **** on a shingle, kick me in the balls! It was the hardest and worse oil change I have ever done.

I am 43 and been doing my own oil changes since I was 16. Nothing I have seen has been so poorly layed out.

What do you guys do to make it easier getting around the 4x4 actuator?

Using a cardboard shield to redirect the oil made it worse.

I am considering buying oil changes from dealer.

Funny how everyone thinks things are laid out so poorly.

LOL..

There is a reason why things are in its place, for pressure, effectiveness, flow, resistance...

Remember, they do this out side the vehicle.

I think the 2014+ 2500 CTD are a bit harder :)

I fabricated sheet metal for under the filter so it drains into the pan. I put it facing the front bumper on an angle for draining purposes.

I use a 1 gallon ziplock bag. I loosened the filter enough so that it could be turned through the bag but not enough to let the oil start coming out. You must make sure that the top of the bag does not drop below the top of the filter, all the way around the filter. Loosen it enough to let the oil out but leave the filter attached until it stops running out. Then remove the filter and let it drop into the bag, checking to see if any more oil is dripping out. Move the bag towards the front of the truck and lift it up and over the power steering unit. I then cleaned up the filter mount with a paper towel.

Tin foil is great as it is heat resistant and can be molded- I have used tin foil for many different applications- Mainly to keep oil off other parts-

Have you tried using something like a **** hammer for welding or a punch to knock a small hole in the filter to drain it in a controlled manner. That's how I do my 99 Powerstroke I catch the oil in a can then spin it off.

Like I said in post #2, I just finished mine. You can see all the oil in the bottom of my zip-lock bag.

This^^ I'd always punch or drill a hole and drain the filter before removing it. No mess

I use this awesome tool for the oil filter! --->Catches & holds all the oil from the filter.

https://www.genosgarage.com/product/filterglove/tools

I do use an oil mat below to catch any drips which might collect on the electric power steering unit.

I also installed a Fumoto Drain valve so wrenching is ever needed.

I am looking into a remote relocation oil filter kit though. If I decide to keep my RAM it will make my oil changes extremely quick and easy and mess free.
Trying to find a good location to mount the filter while keeping the hose length as short as possible.

I remote mounted the oil filter. Makes changing it a breeze.

Do you have any pics and what product did you use? A friend of mine had a lowered Dakota R/T that we put a remote dual filter kit on. I thought it was overkill, but it looked cool.

Here is the kit I was looking at. Similar to the kit I used on my 8HP70 so I can use the same filter.

If anyone has a better quality kit that does not cost a fortune please post it.

Jesus,,,even my $1400 lawn tractor comes with a plastic runway to avoid this mess! On a separate note, on my 3.6 300C, I've dome my last oil change. It has the top-mounted oil filter but is still a pain with belly pan removal etc. I'll pay my local guy $15 and provide the materials! I'll still do the Caliber and likely my "'06 Ram...the 4.7 shouldn't be this bad I hope?

Welcome to hell my friend... I am with you on the this. This is hands down the most difficult of the 30 new vehicles I have owned since the late 90s.

That said... I use a funnel with a really long tube and I strategically place paper towels to catch the goo that misses.
