Good morning....first post. Working through final numbers on 2019 Ram Limited 3500 HO DRW long bed. Trading in my 2018 Chevrolet 2500HD Duramax. First time working with this dealer but all has gone well so far. Upgrading our 5th wheel soon and needed the additional towing capacity.

Quick question...did anyone purchase an extended warranty with their truck? That huge touch screen screams $$$ to me if it ever goes out. Typically I haven’t purchased extended warranties but I am considering it on this one. I have not discussed options or price for the extended warranty with the dealership at this point but wanted any feedback if anyone had any.

Have a great day, All!!

Congrats on the Ram. You will love it!

Opinions on extended warranties are right up there with which oil to run, or which fuel octane. You’re gonna get tons of different answers, all of whom are sure they are right. The truth is, an extended warranty is basically a monetary gamble that only you yourself can or can’t justify. Extended warranties are designed to benefit and be profitable to FCA, otherwise they wouldn’t be sold. So that’s the starting point. From there on, you have to be OK with the fact that you will be putting out anywhere from $1500 to $3000 on the gamble that your truck will require at least that much money in repairs down the road. If you think that is a possibility and it gives you peace of mind, go for it.

Also realize that an 8 year/85000 mile extended warranty on a brand new truck is really Only a 5 year/49000 mile extended warranty since your factory warranty is already good for 3/36000.
Remember, extended warranties start from the purchase date of the truck, not the warranty.

I haven’t been sold on purchasing one and most likely won’t since I’d rather put that money to better use elsewhere where it can grow, and if I need a repair down the road, part of that invested money would take care of it. In my own personal experiences talking to other Ram owners who have purchased extended warranties, very few have had issues where the extended warranty was justified - their trucks just didn’t have issues that expensive. But I have talked to a couple where it did pay off. So like I said, it’s a gamble that only you can justify. Me personally, I’ll roll the dice and take as good care of my truck as I can to help prevent issues later on, and put the money I’d spend on an extended warranty to better use elsewhere.

Good luck either way, you’re gonna love the truck.

I was offered a new extended warranty that goes to 15000 miles with normal wear and tear and they wanted $4500 for it. I too am curious to how well all these sensors cameras 12'' touch screen will hold up. I passed on this opportunity however I did buy a gap policy from my credit union to cover the new purchase price should there be an accident that totals my truck for $499. I believe this is a personal choice to buy an extended warranty or not.

I"ve purchased extended warranties for several vehicles plus some electronics.

Two of the vehicle warranties paid for themselves with one repair per vehicle. I saved over $4400 between the two failures that I otherwise would have paid for if not for the warranty. Both were MOPAR vehicles.

My extended warranty on the 2014 Ram 2500 did not pay off, so to speak, but a portion was refunded to me on a pro-rated basis for the balance of the term after the truck was totaled.

Lastly, my 70" Sony HDTV failed in June and I had purchased a 5 year in-home warranty for it for the princely sum of $199. The warranty expired on July 7, 2019. Talk about timing. After the warranty company could not find a service provider who had parts for the TV, they made me a cash offer to settle the contract. The amount they paid me covered the purchase price of a new 75" Samsung 4K HDTV, a new extended warranty, delivery of the new unit, removal of the old unit and disposal. Sure, there was a bit of negotiation with the TV store on prices but it all worked out. New TV with $0 out of pocket to own it.

So, yeah...extended warranties have paid off for me. YMMV

Thanks for the replies. The deed is done...I did end up negotiating the extended warranty which will cover the truck bumper to bumper for a total of 6 years and 120,000 miles. Best dealership I have ever worked with...absolutely painless and drama-free. I have attempted to upload a pic. Love the truck and look forward to spending time on this forum.73A95B03-117D-4502-B4D8-A5BC1A3D3016.jpeg

Congrats! What dealer did you use? I'm going to be ordering my truck soon and if he is local enough I may check them out. Thanks

Red,

I purchased through Westgate in Raleigh. Salesman was Gregg Jacob's. Had never met him or worked with this dealership prior but Gregg is really good.

Just out of curiosity what did they charge you for the warranty? And it is an FCA warranty or 3rd party? When I bought mine the Ram dealer tried to sell me a 3rd party warranty that I declined.. if I’m gonna do one it’s gotta be FCA.

congrats on the truck!

One thing about the extended warranty is that, if/when you trade the vehicle, the unused (prorated) portion of that warranty is refunded back to you.

And yes... with all the high tech stuff, which is expensive, the extended warranty may be very useful. I am not usually a fan of extended warranties, but in my wife’s and my cases, it was an easy decision.

Good looking truck, I just bought a new truck yesterday, and loving it!

It's a base level tradesman, so I didn't get any of the warranty packages.eb3709f2e3de8e10c4e6d32524b2a085.jpg

Nice truck.

I've kind of wanted a 3/4 ton for a time, but I really have no need for one. Truth told, I may not truly need a 1500.

Some things, however, have nothing to do with need.

Sure do like my Ram. Hope you like yours as well.

Had a silverado 3500 before this current RAM 3500 HO I have. The silverado left me stranded for several days due a DEF issue, at only 9K miles..so I traded. This RAM pulls harder than the duramax, for towing purposes anyway. Also please do yourself a favor and get rid of the stock junk NEXEN tires before they blow. My dually only had 14k miles, mainly just towing... on the tires before the fronts had belt separation and shook the heck out of the front end. The biggest issue is the weight of the engine, up front kills these cheap tires.

I also did an extended warranty as well at time of purchase of both of my RAM CTD powered trucks.

Six holes a burning, and six wheels a turning!
