Without putting gauges on it. It's difficult to know what the problem is. How do you know its charged properly?

I stuck a charger from the store on it, just to see if the compressor was good and that it would engage

Did the charger have a gauge on it?

Ok what was the pressure with the compressor/ac off. What was the pressure when the compressor engaged? Did the pressure drop when the compressor engaged? How low did it drop when the compressor engaged?

What year is your truck ?

If you are infact properly serviced and the compressor doesn't engaged all the time check your pressure switch . If the pressure switch is good check the compressors power & ground ... likely a poor ground .

its a 99, but the compressor is leaking when the clutch is grabbing

it didnt drop much, and it dropped quickly and then slowly got back up to preasure before the clutch grabbed and then the cycle repeated

Ok if the compressor is leaking it usually means the ac system is contaminated with air. Which means the compressor and the Ac dryer will have to be changed. If the compressor has generated metal the AC system will have to be flushed with a cleaner solvent, the fixed orifice or expansion valve will need to be changed ( not sure which one you have on a 99 most likely an orifice) then the system will have to be vacuumed to 28 Inches. See if it holds the vacuum- wait at least 30 minutes with ac gauges on to see if the vacuum does- if it holds then you can start charging it with Freon. But as you can see it requires special tools. Good luck !

Ya forgot to ask one of the most important questions - ambient air temp. Both high and low side pressures are referenced to ambient air temp - at 95* both pressures roughly double the correct pressures for 65*.

You could do that, you have to make sure that the system is clean no contamination- water- metal. Other wise you just destroy the compressor just installed. You would also need to replace the orifice tube and dryer. The system really should be flushed with AC flushing solvent then blown out with nitrogen gas some people use compressed air, if air is used it needs to stay under vacuum longer to get rid of the moisture. All the flushing is done with old parts removed, orifice tube, compressor, dryer. This is needed since you indicated the compressor was leaking and that usually means the system was empty and has been contaminated with air and moisture.
