So today it's 75*F outside.. I drove to the next town over and back so a round trip of about 10 miles. For whatever reason I had left the gauge on the coolant/oil/transmission temp screen. Noticed on the way home coolant reached a max of 217* and oil 222*. But the analog gauge never really left the dead middle peg.

So surely that's not a normal operating temp for an ambient of 75* right?

As soon as I get home, without shutting the engine off I jump out and look in the grill and I see that the shutters are closed. So.. perhaps a smoking gun? Except the MIL light never came on and I have no codes.

Looking for advice.

Can I manually operate the shutters to verify they have the movement they should without damaging anything?

That doesn't look abnormal to me. I've seen my Hemi get to those temps numerous times. The thermostat should open and allow it to cool back down. Did it stay at those temps the entire time?

Oddly enough, when I slowed to under 50 the coolant temp dropped to 210. A mile or two later I got back up near 65 and it rose back up to the 213-214.

I've been reading a big-ass thread about someone asking on the AGS.. I know their purpose but surely to hell mine wouldn't been opened, right?

No clue... but those temps don't seem that concerning to me.

It won't be on your window sticker but it "might" be listed on your equipment listing from Ram. I don't recall. It's standard on every Ram 1500. As long as your coolant temp stays under 240 there's really nothing to worry about.

No idea on when the AGS should open/close.

Have somebody cycle the ignition on while you look through the grill, they should move.

Thanks for the info.. I would like to find that info, as to when/what temp/what situation the shutters do open.

@Wild one Cycle meaning, off -> start -> off again?

Only the 8 speed trucks have the shutters, and not all 8 speed 1500's have them ,Warlocks and i think the Rebels don't have the shutters. Not positive about the Rebels, but the Warlocks don't have them

Off to On but don't start it,if they don't cycle doing that, then try Off to On but start it

That's correct, the 8 speed trucks will have them with the exception of the Rebel and Warlock trucks (DS body).
Even the EcoDiesel has the AGS shutters but the ones in front of the intercooler are removed.

Yup well they did not cycle with just the key in Run.. likely because the engine was still warm. But once it started they slowly shut. When the engine was killed they slowly opened again. So.. working like they should.

What I would like to find out sometime.. what constitutes 'heavy duty transmission' and 'engine cooling'. I can't say for 100% but so far I did not see an aux transmission cooler behind the grill.

I've never really been able to discern what they mean with the HD cooling either, lol. The transmission cooler is in the top part of the A/C's condensor

I have a 2024 5.7 hemi warlock and those Temps are not uncommon and I don't have active grill shutters.

If you are really concerned you could, take the grill shutter mechanism out of the truck. This will require you to trick the ags motor so it doesn't set a code or

You can take every other shutter out, leaving the top shutter, the bottom shutter and the middle shutter which will allow air to flow regardless of shutter operation.

I have 3 rams. One has no shutters, 1 has the top middle and bottom shutter and one has the full set of ags.

The Temps are all about the same at 75 mph.

My experience. I have over 400k miles across various 5.7 hemi platforms

Nah I won't go that far.. the temps I was seeing were concerning is all. Now that I know the shutters are working as intended I'm fine with them. From what I could see the lower say... 1/5th(?) was open without shutters.

Right, That's how it is on almost every vehicle.. but I hope they aren't calling that 'HD' or even 'Auxillary'. lol. Now I'm too curious.. Im going to have to dismantle the top half of the grill just to get a good look.

If you're thinking of wanting some cooler temps, especially in your transmission, look at doing the @caulk04 transmission cooler bypass valve upgrade.

It'll drop the trans temps in the 30C range, and it also drops the engine temps by 3 to 5 C as well.

And, if you're going that far; if you've not done a trans filter and fluid change, good time to consider it, too.

Your transmission will thank you ;)

Searching for transmission cooling upgrades or mods was next on the list. Yeah I've got a transmission fluid/filter change on the docket hopefully before winter grabs hold.

As many on our forum can attest, me included (I've purchased about 8 of them in the last 2 years or so for me, friends & family), this is a fantastic upgrade that does exactly what it was designed to do, and does it flawlessly, too.
