I tow that weight with my 3.21. Good heavens, some people here think you need 600 hp these days. My parents almost towed that weight with a 3 speed 80's station wagon and 140 hp.
It's not really about power. My Ram 2500 6.4L actually makes less power and torque than the 6.2L I had in the GMC 1500 I had before. The 6.4 also isn't that much more powerful than the 5.7 in the Ram 1500. But the 2500 is still a very different towing experience than a 1500.

I have exactly what you're looking for and it works great! 2016 1500 crew cab 5.7 RWD w 3:92, no frills. I tow a ~5k lb. dry, 29 ft. toy hauler, 6400 lbs. loaded. With the WDH (vital), it feels rock steady and has plenty of power - I was passing SUVs going up mountain roads. Scales say I could put 180 more lbs. on my rear axle, but I think I can improve that margin by tweaking my WDH some more.

I was responding to the claims that you need a 3.92 instead of the 3.21. You spend like 5 seconds in first gear and beyond that there are very comparable gear ratios available because the transmission has gears as well.

6.4 gas
Again, yes 3/4 is much better than
A 1/2 ton, but if you must use 1/2 ton look 3.92 , 3.55 will work but
Keep it under 5000 lbs, an as for
3.21 or V 6 just say NO,

( I did this ones , 3.21 tow I sold the truck next week)

I tow now 5000lbs w 3/4 ton gasoline
6.4, ram, 4.10 , yes bit over kill
But tow about 8000 miles a year,
Big transmission, axle, brakes,
So repair bill are lower , just pony up
Cash up front, or pay later,

2500 6.4L Hemi 4.10's 'Off-Road'
I actually get about 2 MPG better towing 7500lbs with my 2500 6.4 Hemi than I did with my 2013 1500 5.7 with 3.55's. Only towed it once with the 1500 about 200 miles and averaged about 6.5 MPG. Towing it with my 2018 2500 6.4 with 4.10's I averaged 8.5 MPG. Empty is a little different. I average 12 with my 2500 empty but averaged 15 with the 1500 empty

I just posted on another about this... If you are geographically stable, i.e. have not plans to move out of your current state for the next 3 years, and you have a decent credit score, have you looked at leasing?
Its a gamble as far as vehicle equity goes, i.e. you total it during the lease your out of the lease and they get any equity i.e. book value for the truck.

However, it does afford the opportunity to purchase more, i.e. new, for at or less than what you will pay per month for used, and in 3 years you can buy it out for less than you would for a used truck at the time.

Leases for the most part are at 0% interest, there is some money number game that gets them a little "interest" but its not like you paying interest on $50,000 for the 1st years of the truck.

And with new you have a better chance of getting what you want and how you want it.........or even ordering it.
