Last year I took a trip out west and the oil temp never got below 225. Often it was between 230 to 335. Once it got to almost 250. I was not towing anything just cruising the interstates.
My gas mileage on my 5.7 was about 20-21 mpg.
This year I partially removed the grill shutters.
I had amazing results. Oil temperatures rarely got above 215, and very often it would be between 204 and 208. When outside temperatures got near 100, the water temperature did go up to about 212 and oil temp got to about 220. It never would get to 230 or 235 like last years trip. I would suspect putting a lower 180 degree thermostat in, the oil temperature would even go down with the water temperature. Just suspecting however.
Gas mileage averaged 24-26 mpg. Once I got 27 mpg.
I attached some pictures.
I want to mention, the driving was done on flat straight roads. I used cruise control and ECO was light was on. Aircondition on and at 71 mph cruise speed on all the time. I got a 5.7L and two wheel drive crew cab.
Also something else very interesting happened. I could actually see a drop in gas mileage from one type of road pavement surface materials to another. It would drop almost 1 mpg immediately when I drove from the typical concrete pavement surface to a very light pink color pavement surface road in South Dakota. The mpg would go up 1 mpg when I reentered the other concrete pavement surface. Must be more friction, I guess.
