I have a 2019 ram 1500 with the 5.7 hemi and a previous owner changed the air breather and I get terrible fuel mileage I just dont think the truck can breath. 6A184364-AE2C-419B-BFA8-AA923970DBF1.jpeg84FA9287-A3C6-4DF3-B84F-705B0B5F1A9C.jpegD621B4E9-A4C7-4D9A-953E-AE787EA8F79D.jpeg

That looks like a Veraram Air Grabber. I'm not familiar with them other than what i've read on this site and i know a lot of guys run them. You might want to do a search for that air filter to see if others have had that problem. I know there is supposed to be a snout that brings air from behind the grill into the air box - can't really see that in your pics. The hand cut opening in your hood insulation is odd... I'm assuming the original air box did not come with the sale... if you have it you could switch back and see if that makes a difference.

I get around 13 on a good day, I did get 17 once on a trip with cruise on.
Who buys a Hemi for good mileage anyways? lol
That's a Vararam Air Grabber, but I have no idea what effect that hood blanket, for good or bad, is making on it? Looks like he "jury rigged" it to try and get more air coming in but didn't know what he was doing.
Mine runs like a scalded dog with the Air Grabber.

Looks like the one on mine came off of something else I just couldn’t see how it was getting air with all of the gaskets when the hood is closed but I agree it’s previous owner didn’t know what he was doing , the tires on it is too big I will eventually go back to the original size of tires.

I could be wrong, probably am, but that intake looks like it’s off a srt car. I also don’t see how it can grab any air as its constricted by the hood.
Unless you are running 35’s or bigger, 13mpg is terrible. I would absolutely try to find a stock intake and swap it out.

Vararam air grabber. I can tell you that if it’s installed properly it’s getting air just fine. If the filter is clean then it’s not struggling to breathe. And it is most definitely not causing your terrible gas mileage. If the engine is tuned or lifted with bigger tires that will cause terrible gas mileage. Are the plastic louvers in the hood open to allow air through? It looks like the hole in the insulation lines up on one of the plastic louvers to draw hot air out while driving. Can also see where the seal on the intake is pressing into the heat shield on the inside of the hood on one side but not the other.

Looks like previous owner used the Mickey Mouse option of putting in the varoom, lol. Either kit it out together proper with all stuff or go back to stock. just IMHO..

Look hoe TRAY BURGE has his and get it configured properly. OH, and even if U go back to stock, it is not gonna gain 6-10 mpg, something else going on there.

I get much better mileage than that, with bigger injectors and a S/C tuned of course, yours must be restricting air flow even though it looks good.F524FDA0-1889-4358-B369-670F02D2058F.jpegI keep an oiled k&n spare with me anytime I take long trips,so maybe I’m a little paranoid but the s/c will try to collapse a dirty one

About 12 MPG
There will always be variables regarding mpg's. Road conditions, weather, stop and go driving, highway driving, romote starts, sitting in a drive-thru, your driving habits and the weight of your foot on the gas pedal and towing or payload will all come into play. These are 6k pound trucks with a hearty V8 the makes close to 400hp. If I baby my bone stock 21 BTS with a 5.7 I get between 13 and 15 but that's with me driving like a 70 year of man on his way to church. Your 12 mpg is in the ballpark

You called? :)

To the OP, I'd get rid of that contraption and go back to stock. If the rest of your engine is stock, there is no need to fiddle with the air intake as it's not the bottleneck in making more performance.
