Finally got round to removing the charge air pump - easy enough job, but when I removed the two long bolts at the bottom left of the pump coolant started dripping out! There is an aluminum spacer between the pump bracket and the engine block. I replaced the bolts and the spacer and the leak has stopped. BUT... there is no mention of this in the workshop manual. How can coolant leak out from a bracket mounting? Is there a crack somewhere in the block?

nope. those holes the bolts go into are drilled right into the water jacket. Completely normal. either leave the spacer in there or get shorter bolts by the amount of the spacer thickness.

The air pump being part of the emissions system, an OEM will never explain how to remove/eliminate those components. That could land them in hot water with the EPA.

The service manual shows you how to remove and replace. So yes it does, just don't reinstall said part. But remember to install bolts plugging water jackets.
Pull the AIR tubs off the exhaust manifolds that attach at the rear of each cylinder head. Cut off the end the attaches to the head. Leaving a couple of inches of tubing to heat and fold over. So you can weld it shut, so it won't leak exhaust. And clean up your engine/ manifolds. And get rid of the non used vacuum hoses and other junk not used anymore.
EGR if working properly do not effect engine performance. EGR works on decel. Most of the time on a high milage truck its blocked up anyway. So block it off or remove it, to further clean up the engine.
