I'd be interested in hearing 1 pro of running near empty, I can name plenty of cons!
If it's stolen, it won't go far.

I just quickly read this subject

The only thing that you can almost trust is the fuel gauge

The miles Until Empty can not be trusted
for instance if it reads 30 miles until empty & you break over the top of a steep hill, the reading will change to 99.
If you are on flat ground & doing 80 miles per hour & then you bring your speed up to 90, the calculator that figures out the miles until empty, that reading will drop or raise with speed & rpm
IT is only guesstimated
The Distance To Empty is calculated by the PCM based on the accumulated value of the current MPG since the last reset. The DTE constantly updates and is a projection only.

Example: A reset is performed at a fill-up and the initial driving routine the vehicle has compiled an average of 15 MPG over X miles driven. The DTE reflects a value based on 15 MPG. As the vehicle continues to be driven it acquires a 20 MPG average. The DTE will reflect the increase and change its value.

Inaccuracies occur with the DTE because the baseline value of how much fuel remains in the tank is inaccurately reported to the PCM (fuel gauge sending unit).

There was no reserve? It's been a long time since I rode, but the fuel cut off could be turned the other direction to access a lower pick up in the tank. It was typically called a reserve tank, but that was a misnomer as it wasn't actually a second tank.
Those cut-offs do not exist anymore since many years ago...

They still exist in some applications. My daughter has a 1 year old 90cc four wheeler. It has a carb, and the valve to shut off fuel, turn fuel on, and reserve to get ya back home if you run out of fuel in the normal on position.

I have 2 harleys. one has a carb and the other is injected. at some point these bikes quit having carbs so no more reserve. my ultra classic shows miles to empty and of course has a low fuel light. it holds 6 gallons and I have put 5.3-5.6 in there before so the theory of not getting too low so as to save the fuel pump has not made any difference for my bike. on my '19 laramie the low fuel light comes on when the miles to empty indicator shows anywhere from 40 to 50 miles left but the needle still quite a ways from E..with all the tech in these vehicles, I would think the fuel monitoring system would be a little more accurate.
