Here in ontario winter is also very cold,it can reach up to -40C with the windchill What may happen if I run them hemi with 5w30 trough the winter months, when the temp reach somedays -28 C ,is a possible damaging the engine in this days?
I'll vouch for those winter temps, you mentioned. I used to deliver Brand-new Trucks for years in all 48 States and 10 Canadian Provinces. I nearly froze at -43C delivering up there!

I didn't see any responses about what exactly "xw-y" means. The first number is the viscosity of the oil, the second refers to the way the oil behaves at operating temperature due to chemical additives. Thus, "5w-20" and "5w-30" oils are the same viscosity - 5 weight. The "5w-30" has additives that make it behave like a 30 weight oil at operating temperature.

I use 5w-20 Mobil-1 or Valvoline in each of my Hemi trucks (185k and 275k). One burns about a quart every 500 miles or so; the other, none. Neither truck leaks oil.

Penzoil and Quaker State are paraffin based oils. They will create varnish inside the engine. This is from personal experience; I had a Ford I bought that kept blowing off oil filters because the relief valve had varnished over. Previous owner said he'd changed the oil religiously every 3000 miles and only used Penzoil.

I wouldn't use Penzoil on anything more complex than a kid's tricycle.

just for information purposes this is not correct sir. See syn oil thread for more info, all you need to know and then some/. 5w20 highest CST visc is 9ish, and 5w30 highest CST visc is 12ish.

I myself typically use Penzoil Ultra Platinum 5-30 and live in Oklahoma where the weather changes from day to day. If you use a PREMIUM SYNTHETIC OIL (Penzoil Ultra Platinum, Redline, or Mobile One) and change it EVERY 5000 miles or less. You will typically have no issues with internal lubrication. Using a 20 weight oil IMHO is way to thin for most older engines as the clearances just don't get the very little extra film that they need.

Was thinking of switching to Amsoil SS moving forward, would anyone recommend using 5w20 or 5w30?
i have been running 5w30 synthetic oils since day 1 but wasnt sure if Amsoil SS 5w20 would suffice in this case moving forward.
Can i go past 10k miles on SS? never gone that far before on any other oil.
thanks
Sir, have just hit 140k on my 2016 Ram 1500 4wd crew cab. Completed a 13k mile trip to Alaska from VA to the left coast, straight north, then return across the prairies. Have always used whatever name 5w20 synthetic was on sale plus a good quality filter. Prefer my 5k OCF schedule, but have gone up to 8800 miles because of travel. No valve train issues, never added a drop of oil in between, and about every 20 k add Berryman oil additive for high mileage vehicles. No idea if the latter is helping but it doesn’t appear to hurt anything. I like to use OEM recommended spec including oil viscosity. I’ll be sticking with 5w20. I’m not sure what your rationale is for going from a 5w30 to a 5w20 regardless of brand. As vehicle gets older the importance of regular OCF and preventive maintenance becomes more critical. Grease is cheaper than steel.

I would go with the 5w30. your engine should go another 100 thousand miles. Amsoil is very expensive . You may want to think about changing it every 6 to eight thousand miles if you can afford it and plan on keeping the truck for a while.

which ever is cheaper. As long as it is synthetic, one brand is not any better than the next, no matter what they claim. It is made by one of the big oil companies and repackaged and advertised as something special. Anyone remember Slick 50? Shell synthetic oil. Nothing more. Always use the viscosity the manufacture recommends. They spend a lot of money to find out which will give the engine the most duration and benifit. As far as how long between oil changes, i will say this. If it is synthetic, you do not have to worry about burning or a loss of viscosity......BUT......the reason for changing it is to remove the material than comes from the rings, berings and other moving parts, not the oil itself. Again, the manufacture spent a lot of time and money to figure out how long to go between changing oil based on normal wear and tear putting material in the oil.

Has anyone tried Kirkland 5w30 full syn? just curious.
Yes. I started using the Kirkland last year and add the Lubeguard to it. Only have 50K on my 17, so don't know the results yet, but I think it is going to be a good option for a poor mans oil. I tow our 23 foot camper with no problems. Like everyone on this post says, just keep your oil changed. I would never go 10K, no matter what the bottle says on it. Would like to see what I could come up with for our new RAV4 Prime oil. Very few options for 0-16.... OBTW, I run 5W-30 as I don't drive much in the winter and our winters here in Vermont are getting warmer with very little extreme cold weather..

Living where it's hot I've always used 10W-30. Having had a father who was a petro-chemical engineer I have always been of the opinion of using a high quality oil and changing it often with a good filter. Only one of my vehicles in 45 years has had oil problem. Ex-wife's mini-van threw a rod at 102K. I looked at it for her. The oil filter was the one I had put on a year an half ago at 82K. Gee, maybe I did have at least one useful skill.............

Put the Amsoil dual bypass filter kit on ( easy install ) and you can do 20k miles between changes. I have sampled my oil at 20k and sample results show no reason to change, but I never stretch it further. Test results don't lie.

I run 10/30 in all my Hemi’s as does all my friends and family we put miles on them and never have
Cam problems or any problems with engines except exhaust manifold now and then

I have 16’ Ram 5.7. During the 1st 80k I ran 5w20 Royal Purple then switched to Amsoil Signature 5w20. I changed it right around 5k miles. My Ram has almost 187k miles and has not ever been opened up. Original Cam & Lifters, moreover I’ve had the oil tested by Blackstone Labs so far all 4 results were phenomenal recommending me to change the oil at 7k vs 4800. Other than recommended tune ups, I also run a catch can, it screens out about 8floz of oil during each interval.
Anyway, depending on your driving conditions & idle hours will determine when you should change your oil. In addition, you could always run a test on your oil to help give you more info on your truck.

I have used Amsoil from day one I change every 6,000 miles and other than changing all my filters my oil looks new when I drain it, I just turned over 150,000 miles with not one problem. Sometimes you vehicle will throw a code saying your not using Mopar oil.

My 2 cents. I bought my 08 Ram 1500 at Copart with light front cosmetic damage with 89k on it 6 years ago. I have no idea what ol or miles was on the previous oil change, but on start up would tick 2-3 times then be quiet. I changed oil and put in Amsoil SS 5-20 as per the manual. No tick. Ever. Last Fall changed to Amsol SS 5-30, didn't notice any real difference except my scanner had a code saying "wrong viscosity. I have since kept 5-20 SS in it. Does it make a difference? Ask the truck.

It's generally only the later 3rd Gens and very early 4th Gens that'll throw that code, anything after mid 2010 is usually good with 5W-30. They reconmend 5W-30 in the 2500's with the 5.7 if you're towing.

I switched to 5-30 at 30k but garage kept and never at that stage in your hemis life I would baby it more then when everything was tighter. I would be conscious of the oil pressure drop at idle and go from there.

It’s easier since my new car uses 5-30 also I’ve switched from 5-40 to 5-50 on my 60 k Audi. I’ve never gone beyond 4K on any of my 4 vehicles and I spend a lot of time around real car building pros, and watch and listen. The manufacturers are not your friends. And oil filters clog up then you are dependent on the bypass.

There's two features I wasn't aware of. They actually programmed oil viscosity? Oy! Mebbe EPA made them.

Didn't know that heavy duty Hemi required 5W-30 with the car motor. That's damning right there, in terms of they KNEW they'd get too high a wear rate with these too-thin oils spec'd just for mileage.

And then there's 0W-40........(stop rant right here)
