2014 1500 4x4 139k - bought at 46k and have rotated oils between redline 5-20, 5-30, and PUP 5-30 and recently 0-40 right after noticing noise a few weeks ago.

To date- the engine had been a relatively quite and trouble free engine - only a smooth sewing machine sound.

So, after a cold start one afternoon, it was 45f outside, I heard an engine noise.

It was not consistently on every revolution, but was an intermittent and semi synchronous metallic ping type noise that tracks with RPM's. its like a ping-ping-pause-ping-ping-ping-ping-pause and the ping is not like a high pitched ping, it does however sound like metallic bubt kind of muffled

I am hoping its an exhause bolt however, ive had an exhause "leak" on another vehicle that was more of an annoying loud whisp.

Sound quiets a little bit at higher rpm's and when worm but not a whole lot.

I have not had any header bolts replaced to date.

Thoughts...? I will try to get some audio up soon

EDIT: Amplifying information - its pretty loud, this is not a subtle noise

You tried all of those oils in 2 weeks? Mine took 500 miles, others have taken 1700 miles, one 2300 miles, it is the science of the formula. Redline takes up to 1500 miles to work in many cases. Have you checked exhaust bolts?

Lol no no no! Sorry i didnt clearly word that haha

Ive just used all of those oiles on my oil changes. I only have one oil change that I took it somewhere and had it done, all other oil changes I did and used RP or SRT filter.

I used the PUP 0-40 this most recent change when I first had the noise show up. and am about 700 miles into the new oil

Thanks for clearing it up, so it was quiet on redline, latest oil change PUP 0w40 showed up right away or after some miles? level on dip stick is good?

I have never had a noisy engine on any of the oils ive used, the previous oil before my recent 0-40 was PUP 5-30.

So to be clear, I have never had a noisy engine - this sound came out of nowhere and has been persistent. Might be good to note I am in alabama and this alll occured on a cold evening and since has not gone away, but the noise is persistent but not quite synchronous as I would expect a lifter thats bad to sound.

Oil level is SAT, and I admittedly changed my oil at a higher 8000 mile OCI- but am not blowing smoke when I say that 95% of the miles on this truck are rural highway miles 50-70mph and one stoplight before pulling into my warehouse.

I'd look hard at exhaust bolts, the one thing with 0w40 PUP is shear, so it is susceptible to noise but usually only after 500 miles plus, if it was noisy right after the change, I would first think it was bolts. If you can see any bolts loose, maybe you need to do another oil change just to verify. Take your webcam out and capture at least 30 seconds, upload to youtube. If I had to guess, I'm thinking your issue is bolts.

Thanks, i am really hoping it is bolts or I even saw someone state that rocks caught in the heat shield can also make a similar noise.

So now I'm on the other side, I think that is lifter tick, especially if it sounds like that warm idle.

No sir, this happened at random one day, then changed oil to see if it helped quiet it, but it has not stopped since. It actually was quiet when I started up the truck, rode a mile to gas station, and recorded the video when I got back just now.

I had ~6000 on 5-30 PUP -> Sound started ->immediately changed to 0-40 PUP and SRT filter ->700ish miles in - sound still showing up

I'd dump some lubegard biotech 15 ounces in and see if this changes sound at all. This is what we call poor mans redline, it is a moly boost with esters and phos, built to alleviate ticks. Give that moly in pup 0w40 and kick up and allow it to plate if possible. I would try this first, but you know what I would say next? If that doesn't go = redline 5w30.

I'd say it sounds like lifters, but your histology suggests exhaust. It is rare to change to 0w40 PUP and have no relief, it could be too far out of tolerance for oil to correct, dunno. Good luck

I would have a mechanic use a stethoscope... if a lifter has really failed you could save some $$ fixing it before it wipes out a cam lobe.

Just to note,

Alabama evenings are not cold enough to make a 0W40 cause oil related problems Soley because of viscosity.

I agree, but just to clarify, i had 5-30 PUP when the noise occured. I only put the 0-40 in after it happened in hopes of eliminating it.
