Are lifters and cams a big issue for the 6.4?

I’m looking into buying a truck within the next year or two and I have it narrowed down to a Ram or Ford, most likely a gasser. Seems like the more digging I do the more I find about Hemi cam and lifter issues. Is it a huge issue in the 6.4s?

I heard it has the same problem as 5.7 but not as much... Not sure though

I have a 6.4 and my only problem was the mds solenoids went out. I also request my dealer use 5w40 pup. They always do as I ask of them. I have a tech that let's me go back and see what oil they put in it. They call it diesel oil.

Short answer is no the 6.4 does not have the cam n lifter problem that the 5.7 has.
The 5.7 problem is fixable with prior planning on the customer. 5w30 pup or red line oil. It calls for 5w20 but the 10w30 remedy's that hemi tick

What is the cam issue with the 5.7 Hemi I just bought one should I be worried?
Not yet. It usually starts being a problem at around 60K-70K
If you'll use the red line 5w30 and a Royal Purple filter it will keep it at bay past 100K. It's the best advice I can offer

I’m starting to feel like going to the Hemi was a mistake. Should I have bought the 6 cylinder. Never had an issue with the 4.7 in my 04 Ram maybe it would have been better to buy new bed sides and get the 04 a paint job . I liked the looks of the gen4 but if the Hemi is a problem I hope the lifetime warranty takes care of me

Lifetime will take care of you but you can take care of yourself by using the 5w30 in your 5.7

Also starting to become an issue on the 3.6 across various lines
IMO, the oil now days, while better in some respects vs. days gone by is missing a few important items in it.
That and mixed with the rec. extended oil changes (thank you JD Powers) is a large part of the problem. Also people are keeping their vehicles longer.

Isn’t the only difference between 5w-40 and 0w-40 is the thickness when cold?

I think 0W40 runs better for cold climates, but not sure if 5w40 is better for mild climates or if you can use 0w40 just fine. if manual says 0w40 on the 6.4 I'll probably stick with that.

Run a quality synthetic oil and dont push the oil change intervals too far and you should be fine. IF you can use Red Line 5w30 as it has proven to work the best for the Hemi.

How many miles can you go using this synthetic oil between oil changes?

If I buy one I’ll probably keep it at every 5000 miles, it would give me piece of mind. I go every 3000 miles on my POS beater now.
