I have a 2013 Megacab Laramie 4x4 CTD with the 8.4AN and the backup camera in the nav screen. When backing and turning right, as I get around a half turn on the wheel from the steering stop the guide lines on the screen disappear. I took it in a couple of weeks ago and the dealer, after some testing and adjustment checking said the problem was in the radio. They didn't have one in stock so they ordered it.

On the same visit I took the truck to the body shop for some warranty work, but they had to take pictures and get approval to do the work. About a week later I got calls that the radio was in and the body work had been approved. I took the truck in on Monday.

They finished the body work today and took the truck to the service shop. About an hour later I get a call from service and, as near as I can tell, the factory disallowed the repair and recalled the radio. The service adviser said they opened a case and were told that the lines disappearing was "normal functionality" which, I think is dealer-speak for we don't know what causes that. The SA told me they checked several other trucks on the lot and they all did it.

I don't think "they all do that" is the same thing as normal functionality. Normal functionality is when the unit performs as it should, i.e. if the lines stayed on from lock to lock.

What experience does anyone have with this problem? I think I was told that it was normal for diesels. Do the gas trucks do the same thing? Has anyone successfully fixed this?

Thanks,

Al

Total ********, I have never seen that. I have had one RA2 and three RA4 installed in my truck. I did not switch the radios because they were bad (long story an irrelevant). I never had my lines disappear, the only time they acted weird was when I got my clock spring out of sync upgrading my steering wheel. When the clock-spring was out the lines would jump from side to side but not disappear.
I should note that my truck came with the RA1 radio and no camera, I installed the factory tailgate camera and upgraded my radio to the RA4 (8.4AN).
I know a lot of folks with these trucks and never heard of this.
Did they show you or did you ask to see this behavior in other trucks?

2 things I might try, 1 disconnecting the battery (to reboot the radio) and 2 restore the radio to factory settings thru the engineering mode. But you should not have to go thru any of that they should fix it, they are lying thru their teeth and just want you to live with it.

My lines do not dissappear either......make them show you the trucks that they said they tested. I think they are feeding you a line of crap. What good is it to have the lines move with the steering wheel if they dissapear? Sounds to me like it could possibly be your clock spring having an issue. It is located behind your steering wheel. It is the device that actually sends the signal for the backup lines to move. Maybe try a different dealer who will actualy admit it doesn't work correctly.

This is absolute BS as stated above . Did you ever speak to the service manager or an actual tech. about the issue ? The service writer guy up front 90% of the time can't even change his own oil , idiots !
Tell them to show you on another truck , simple as that , they've already made their bed with that one ! LOL !
When another truck doesn't do it , tell them to verify the Lin bus CBC3 signal from the clockspring . Say that with confidence , if they look at you like you have 3 heads on your shoulders , then go to a different Dealer !

Thanks Everyone

I've contacted Customer Care, I'll see what they say. In the interim I'll probably go over Monday and take it up with the service manager. RLK, what is the bus name? Is that "L in" as in "Ell In"?

When they first said it was the radio I thought that was odd. I didn't know where the signal came from but I asked if they had checked the sensor that was sending wheel position and they said it was correct, so they may have checked the signal.

This dealer is the only one within 75 miles, so I'm stuck with them.

Doubtful this will help but if you reboot your radio like cptwing stated above and that doesn't work , install the latest software in your radio .
I only have the RA2 5.0 Radio and my grid lines wer totally missing until I updated the software , now they are there and work great lock to lock .
Just a thought ... hell I troubleshot everything and changed many individual components in the process , in the end it was a simple SW update ...

Allegedly I have the latest software. While the truck was in they installed the anti-hacking update. I'll try the re-boot.

You may have to leave the battery disconnected for a while , couple hours ...

Just didn't know what "Lin" was. Didn't want to sound like an idiot when I talked to the service manager. Thought maybe it was an abbreviation for something.

What are you using for a reference? I've been thinking about getting a service manual of some sort.

Thanks,

Al

It's fixed!

Thanks to everyone for the inputs. Everyone was right, everyone was wrong. It wasn't the clock spring, it wasn't the radio, it wasn't "normal functionality". It was the camera. I opened a case with Customer Care. They sent a camera which the dealer installed today. My guide lines are back.

I don't claim to understand it as it sure seemed like the radio put the lines on the video as guided by the clock spring, but they told me they had previously checked the clock spring output and it was OK.

So I guess all the other trucks they checked on the lot have bad cameras too. :naughty:
