So thinking about cleaning and spraying the bed armor on them to keep them protected and then a layer of matching paint. Anyone ever done this?

I didn't paint on top of them. But I put some bedliner on my chrome ones.

I think doing that would look good. Do they make the spray on in white to act as the base coat? I see spraying black then a light color being the issue unless your truck is black.

I'm not sure if they do or not. I know bed-liner companies offer different colors, but I'm not sure if they're available in DIY kits. If yours are chrome, I would suggest scuffing them up really good. I should have done mine better, but it's holding up fairly good so far.

always use a grey primer as a base coat after scuffing up the bars, then spraying the canned liner on

Anyone think I can make my step bars into black? Was gonna sell them to buy some black ones but if I can make them black myself that would be cheaper, easier and more fun!! So what kind of stuff did you all use?

I scuffed mine up with 800 grit sandpaper. Then I used Rustoleum bedliner in an aerosol can, several coats. Then I sprayed DupliColor Bed Armor, also aerosol, on top of it for the texture.

I wanna say like $30-$40. I think I used 3 cans of Rustoleum and less than one can of DupliColor.

Okay, could all this stuff be found at an auto store? So you primed it first then sprayed bed lined on it?

I didn't put primer on them. But you certainly could. Probably make it stick better. Mine are holding up pretty good.

So what's the difference between rust oleum bed liner and duplicate color bed liner? About to go to the store so I'm trying to figure out all that I need

For me it was easier to cover more area with the Rustoleum. And it sprays pretty evenly. I liked the texture of DupliColor better, so I just put a couple coats on top. It sprays out in kind of a splatter, so I think covering a large area with just it would be kind of hard. I got both of them at Advance Auto.

Until your arms feel like they're gonna fall off and then some more probably. If I had mine to do over I would sand a lot more than I did.

You could use a primer. It wouldn't hurt anything at all. Mine I have held up pretty good without it. But I never go offloading or anything either. Or even on gravel. Lol
