I know there are many bed mat posts, but I don’t see any particular to this. I have the RAM bed mat in my bed, but haven’t installed the mat that covers the tailgate. I’m wary of installing it because it’s held in place by self tappers and I’m not sure if I want a bunch of holes in my tailgate. I’m also not confident that they will hold the mat in place if something is dragged across the tailgate mat. Anyone have this setup with the tailgate mat installed? Any information or opinions would be appreciated. BTW I do love the bed mat it stays in place and is nonslip. Works great.

I never drill holes for the tailgate mat. I either use the hard plastic bed liner type that attaches with the factory screws or if I already have the rubber mat, I buy a decent sized roll of 3M double faced tape and attach the mat with plenty enough tape to get the job done. Way better than drilling holes :)

Like mentioned above, match the factory bolts.

I have no issues drilling anywhere for the most part. That’s why I bought a rugged pickup truck and not a Cadillac Escalade. I have the Deeze bed mat and Deeze universal tailgate mat.
Drilled the tailgate one without remorse and it’s holding up like a champ. I went one step smaller with the drill bit from what they recommend to use in the instructions so the screws could bite harder. I’ve had zero issues with it. Is it perfect like an $800 bedliner? Not really... but it works great for my needs and it was just $40.

I believe I took out screws already in the bed from the factory and put those through the mat cover. Been a bit but I remember figuring something like that out when I installed

I had a bed mat cover for my tailgate on my2nd gen. I "screwed" in on, but having it on made the tailgate heavier then it was. My 4th gen has the spray in bed liner, and I put a rubber bed mat on top of that. The tailgate I just left alone since it was sprayed with the bed liner, and I think that is more then enough protection w/o having the extra weight, plus having to mount a mat. In lieu of a mat on the tailgate, I sure would look at just getting the tailgate sprayed with bed linger material. Just my thought.

I also think some of the 3M two sided tape would do the job or they also sell some industrial strength velcro that hold stuff really well.

I have the OE factory spray-in Liner. I have a DeeZee rubber bed mat -- to prevent things from sliding around. I have a Bed Rug tailgate mat -- which fastens via velcro. I like this setup. It's easy on the knees.
