The water pump on my last truck (2015 6.4) went bad. That one sounded like a pig squealing under the hood. And it was very consistant always there, cold start, warmed up, driving, idle, always there. This one on cold start it's not there. one day, i'll drive all day and nothing. next day it'll come and go.

I took it to the dealer and they kept the truck for 5 days. On the fourth day, the service advisor told me he heard the squeak. by the time he brought the tech over to look at it, it went away.

Just a shot in the dark, but is there anyway to pinpoint which pulley it’s coming from? And anyway to magnify it? When I drive up to my drive way, put her park, it’s there. When I open the gate and drive in and put her in park again, it’ll go away. If sit there idling sometimes it’ll start, and sometimes it won’t.

I just want the dealer to hear it so they can at least diagnose it. I totally get it, if it’s not there, what are they suppose to look at.

So today I went to my buddy’s tire shop to get my tires rotated. When I pulled up, he heard the squealing. I told him about the luck I had when I took it to the dealer. He used a stethoscope to check all the pulleys. He said “dude your fan pulley is bad”.

Now, when I take it back to the dealer, should I tell them I had a mechanic look at it and told me this? Or just them I think the pulley is bad?

The dealership will prob do the same test. Sometimes it’s nice to see what they tell you it is and you’ll get an idea for how honest a dealer maybe. But we are talking about dodge so...I bet they’ll tell you you need a new water pump, idler pulley, thermostat. Seems there go to when they don’t want to bother figuring out what the noise really is.

But to be honest, that’s kind of how mine sounded when it turned out to be the bearing on the water pump.

I would tell them exactly what your mechanic friend told you.

If it sounds like this:

Then mine was a water pump bearing. :) hope that helps some.

At 104k miles I’m out of warranty, so I go to my trusted mechanic ... He showed me the water pump ... The bearing was about an 1/8” from coming out of the water pump housing, and a major on road failure ... I got lucky ... The belt and thermo were original, so I made the call to replace those, as I intend to keep the truck for a few more years ... I got overcharged a lil on parts, but he’s gotta make a couple bucks, and it was way cheaper than the dealer

I wish mine was consistent like that so they could of figured it out. Mine comes and go. BTW, it took my buddy about 45 mins to pin point where it was coming from.

Does the dealer use stethoscopes and would they spend that much time looking for it?

I made an appointment. The soonest I can get in is March 6. Hopefully it'll get worse so it'll be easier.

I’m sure the dealer does. I watched a mechanic at a tire shop use a long handled screwdriver and held it up to his ear. Old school. I got a second opinion on mine besides the dealers.

Btw- mine came and went for awhile too. So I ignored it for about 6k miles and then it was as loud as it was in the YouTube video. Maybe yours will fail more in time as well.... :)

Yours could be as simple as a slightly misaligned belt or as bad as a bearing. I wouldn’t worry to much till it starts getting louder and more consistent.

There should be a dipstick in your coolant overflow tank. There's a round piece to the dipstick for a finger to grab onto, and it'll lift straight up and out.

Got a little bit of an update, truck was the dealer since last Wednesday. They said the alternator bearing was bad and replaced the alternator. Got the truck back this morning and a few miles down the road, starts squealing again.

Took her right back. Shop foreman said sounds like idler pulley. I said it’s the water pump. They said I could leave it there. Told them I have to my kid to the doctor and will drop it off in the morning.

So back to the dealer she goes.

God I missed driving that truck.

Are they going to credit you for the alternator you didn’t need ? Or was it covered ?

Literally just drove out of the shop with this squeaking issue. Turned out to be the transmission oil condenser leaking fluid on the belt. Replaced the trans oil condenser, trans cooler lines, belt, and radiator cap. No more squeaking. I'd ask your dealer if it's any of those.

I know for a fact i'm not leaking, the belt is clean and dry. Hopefully the squeal is gone, if not, i'll ask them about those... thank you.
