Just bought a 2012 single cab ram 5.7 from the dodge dealership 83000 miles on it 1 year warranty. Trying to figure out if anyone can help me or knows the answer. Almost every time I start it up it blows bluish smoke meaning oil? But doesn’t do it when accelerating Seems to be worse when the engine is cold but even when warm it still blows smoke the dealer says it’s normal but I do not think any motor should be burning oil on start up anyone know the corporate? The picture doesn’t do justice sometimes it looks like there’s a fire there’s so much smoke

Probably why the guy traded it in. First, get it documented under your warranty. Then you can try cleaning it, could be clogged injectors if youe are lucky. Run some redlne s1-1 full bottle with about 1/2 tank of gas. Could run sea foam through vac lines, do this before changing plugs. I'm bet dimes to donuts plugs are do, do sea foam before you replace plugs. Change pcv valve, it's time for that as well. You could try a thick oil, see if it comes down a bit, it could be valves or rings. 0w40 or a thick 5w30, and see if the smoke is less. Bottom line, your truck is burning oil, not using it, which isn't a good thing. In many cases, the begining of the end.

Actually that is burning when it's cold more then warm might be a good sign, this is when oil is thickest. So just maybe it isn't rings or valves. I wouldnt get my hopes up, but it's possible. Can you give it back? do they have a grace period and are you in it?

Everything Burla posted is spot on. I see you have your temp plate still. Have it smog tested at inspection. I am betting it will fail. Then let the dealer fix it.

Blue smoke is very abnormal, and in many states they can't even sell a truck that has blue smoke. It most certainly wouldn't pass smog or inspection.

How much did you pay for the truck? Hw long have you owned it? I'm pretty sure Texas will null that under smog transfer laws. Don't let the dealer talk you out of it.

If I were to make an educated guess I would say valve seals. When the truck sits oil leaks down the valve guides into the cylinders and blue smoke upon start up. This is not normal---contact your selling dealer. ps worst possible might be rings but a cylinder leak down test would give you that answer. Good luck

If the dealer provided smog, it is more then likely fraudulent. Go to dmv as soon as possible, get it on record that shows the earliest date. Keep all reciepts. The fact they say it's normal just shows you it is a dealer with low morals. bad yelp them if they dont fix it.

Just bout it no grace period just 1 year warranty had it for 2 weeks an a week of that has been at the ram house. Idk if we have smog regulations in Tx will do my research though hoping it’s not the rings. I’m not going to take the truck back until I see it resolved

well, as long as you get it documented I wouldn't leave it if they deny warranty coverage on it. Like it or not it's your property now, leaving it might not work out. But, as long as you have documentation and that shows it is blue smoke in the paper work, you should have relief on many angles. smog or warranty failure relief. If it is valves or rings, it wont last the year if you are rough on it.

Id be doing wot runs all the time I could get away with it.

I have a reg cab as well, they aren't making them any more. Once you get this resolved these are great little vehicles, and you have low miles. Plug into forum, we have a lot of good fixes for stuff around here, many good transmiision upgrades that will make that thing run forever. you have a 6 speed trans yes?

Yes sir I do wish it was the 8 speed it’s the 6 speed this is the first time I’ve Owen a ram/ hemi I’m mechanically inclined so I understand what you are saying. I would definitely love to make some mods for the longevity of the motor the truck it self is great performance wise shift great Motor feels really strong to just that smoke I know is incorrect y’all reassured me definitely going to escalate it

roger that, when it is settled come on back and look around. As far as 8 speed versus 6, the real beny to the 8 is fuel economy. But they aren't easiy servacible or upgradable as easy as the rfe, but they are cheaper to buy. Basically a disposable tranny, and I'm sure it will be buildable as we go forward.

First, if you upgrade the valve body you may never need to fix the tranny, also consider line pressure upgrade via tune. Hemi395 aka corey found these jewels, every guy with a rfe should watch those. Also find out if you have a thermo valve or not, it is a popular delete item, and synthetic filter with thread upgrade, as well as pan with drain plug, be careful of the cheap pans, and a lot of us use ester base reldine c+ fluid, it's an upgrade all by itself.

Get a plate and line pressure, good pistons and seals and springs, you wont get leakage that ruins so many of our over drives. I'm not sure who makes the best kit, that guy has came a long way, but there are many valve body kits out there. If you can get Sharadon to build you one, that will be great as well. They had issues getting cores, don't know if they still are doing them. Metal thread upgrade is key as well, the plastic that holds the filter in can break and we have lost a tranny here over it.

see if you can find the hex center one of these, they fit the tightest.

its never rings its always valve stem seals still weird that it is doing it at such a low miles tho. Mine has 200k on it and i am burning 0 oil but i replaced my seals at 180k when i did cam.

Also was it really dame/humid out when you noticed smoke? and does it do it when hot aswell or only on cold starts?
