Im looking to add the OEM trailer brake controller to my 2012 1500 Bighorn. I verified that both wires are already there. Before I orded the controller I called 2 dealers to find out how much it would be to flash it since everywhere i read says it needs done. When i talked to the dealers they both told me that it doesnt need it and it would just be plug and play. Is this correct, even when I llok at the parts on ebay from dealers it says that it requires a flash. Maybe my dealers just dont want to deal with it.

I can't verify if the 12's need a flash or not. I would think it does especially if you have a slt or higher trim package with the display in the dash. If your truck is basic and the is no menu in your evic it's possible that it is standalone. I hope someone that has added a oem controller for a 12 will chime in.

Just installed one in my 2014 (purchased off eBay for $182, shipping included). Took about 30 minutes to install. Truck does not recognize the controller, so I have an appointment at a dealer (on Wednesday morning) to get it "flashed".

Alright, guess my next step is to just order one and install it to see if it will work or not. Thanks everyone. Do you know what the dealers are roughly charging to flash these if it is needed?

I put one in my 2010, which should be the same as yours. It worked fine without the dealer flash, you just don't see it on the EVIC. My dealer charges a flat, 1 hour fee for something like this, $119.00 for me. I had other stuff done at the same time though, including flashing the radio for the backup cam I installed, so I didn't wimper too much when I bent over.

Just talked to another dealer and they are telling me that it will need flashed. They said it will work by using the manual lever but not when the brakes are applied. They also quoted me $280.00 and that is them ordering the part, installing it and flashing the computer. Doesnt sound too bad of a deal seeing how they are $180 on ebay.

Yes that's very reasonable. The 13+ is about 400 total

pre 2013 it will work without the flash, you just wont see it or be able to control it on the evic. 2013+ requires a flash because you need to evic to set the gain. sounds like the dealer either doesnt know or wants a few $$ out of you. fyi, you can get the controller brand new for ~$130 in you order the controller and bezel separate. if you order the kit, they jack the price up.

Well, everything came in today and installed. Only took 30 min and I think 20 minutes of that was trying to get it plugged in. They sure dont give you much wire to play with.
