Brakes Squeaking

So, while I'm in the mood for maintenance, since it needs to be good to go by the end of summer for college, I need to replace my brakes. I doubt they've ever been done and my truck has almost 74k miles on it. I was wondering what all needed to be replaced. Just the pads, or the rotors also?

Rotors pads, go ahead and flush your brake fluid. Grease up your caliper bolts. And id put an anti squeek on the pads. And your good to go! Probably a 4hr job ish. Its a lot easier to bleed the breaks with a buddy. My stock brakes lasted about 64k miles.
I scored a hell of a deal with mine. I payed $300 for a shop to do all 4 that was including parts.

Okay. So basically replace everything. What do you think a shop would charge to do this normally? Since you said you scored a hell of a deal. And is there any benefit to ceramic pads?

I would take a look at your rotors an see what kind of condition they're in and decide if the need replaced

Even if they are in good shape get them turned atleast. Can feel them with the back of your fingernail. But even that isnt totally accurate. But just look at it, notice any cracking or anything.

For an entire brake job most places will charge you $600-$800 including parts. For all new parts its like $200-$300 or somthing like that. I got that deal at the same place i got the deal on those wheels i sold and made a huge profit. Its all about who you know these days.

We have a friend with a shop I could get it done yet. But if I'm replacing the rotors I might as well upgrade em too.

I read you want to look for rust on and inside and hard spots on the rotors to help determine if they need to be replaced. Mine look like they've been scratched up. That's normal right?

Brakes are real easy to. Most rotors look scratched over time. If your replacing them then it doesnt matter! Lol.

And when your getting ready to put the new pads on you will need to compress the 2 cylinders that push the pads, all you meed is your old pad over top of the cylinder and a C clap compressing them. You need to compress them at the same time.

I'd replace the rotor/pads yourself and save some $$$. Its not that hard.

Awesome. Haha. Then it looks like I'll be doing this myself. Just have to find some nice rotors I like. Would be cool to get some black ones.

Now onto the fluid. You said I should drain and replace. How would I go about doing that? What exactly does it require to bleed the brakes? I've seen it done with a bottle of a little fluid, a tube, and a friend pumping the brakes, but never really understood it.

Start at the brake furthest from the brake booster. So passenger rear. There is a screw that has like a nipple on the end of it. Get some tubing amd a bottle. Fill the bottle with a little water and stick one end of the tube in the water. The other end goes on the nipple.

Lets say you are at the wheel and your buddy is pressing the brakes.

You tell him to push the petal then you loosen the nipple and it draines the fluid. You close the nipple and then tell him to stop.

And just keep topping off the fluid as you go.

So after you get clean fluid in that one. Also use clear tubing so.you can see it better.
So after the passenger rear you go to driver rear, then to passenger front, then to driver front.

No no! That would be bad! You fill an empty bottle with water. And thats where you drain the old brake fluid. Basically the water helps from air getting back into the system and helps you see the air bubbles. So you have tubing coming from the nipple from the calipers going into like a water bottle with some water in it.

And greasing up the caliper bolts you should really do that. Its the bolt that has a boot on it and. It slides. A lot of the times that is what will squeek when you press the brakes. Itll only squeek when pushing down on the pedal. You wont hear it when the brakes are engaged. Like slowing down and what not.
Im not to good at explaining things LOL. So sorry if you cant understand me haha.

Also, ive never got toexperiment this, but they say you should do the rears, then wait a week to do the fronts. Basically that helps the rears kinda break in, and then when you do the fronts the rear will be able to help out the new fronts untill they break in.

And bleeding the breaks should be the very last thing you.do. you can bleed them with everything attached. And when you are done take it around your neighborhood and do some hard stoops, slow stop, anf so on. Get them broke in that way.

Sounds good! Now what do you knows know about brake parts? I'm thinking I'm gonna go with Hawk brake pads. And then for the rotor. Would drilled and slotted help at all? Or one or the other? The black rotors I like are both drilled and slotted.

Ive heard good things on the hawk brand. And i agree you should get black ones. that would look sick!
Good thing about drilled and slotted is they cool off a lot faster.
And the bad, ive read some drilled rotors tend to crack over time. Some people say they dont last as long as regular, but from what ive seen they last pretty long.

I would read some reviews from other buyers and see what they say about them. With drilled and slotted if you can get a warrenty for them then i would do that. And before you put the new rotors on feel them and make sure you know what its supposed to feel like and look like stock, that way along the ways you can see/feel any imperfections

I will definitely be keeping an eye on them if I go through with it. I agree the black would look good. I would be painting my calipers too. So then my truck would be extremely blacked out. Lol
