This information is not specific the 68RFE transmission but electronically controlled automatic transmissions in general. A shift solenoid fault code without an actual transmission symptom is probably an electronic glitch from the said system that controls it. I would drive the truck sensibly and work it when pulling/hauling and not worry about it unless it happens again, because it could have just been a fluke. As robust and hardy as these trucks are, their electronics can be a little finicky.

I do agree with this, but the feeling the OP had with his new RAM, just out of the box with check engine lights and issues, that pit in the stomach must have been huge. That or rage ha :)

Your truck did throw a code and you know what the code was. For your dealer to say they won't look at it till it throws it again is nonsense. Go to another dealer. This crap after sales service really needs to be dealt with by FCA. If it keeps up a lot of guys will quit buying RAM. They are great trucks but they still need service and a lot of you guys aren't getting it. Lucky for me, after a lot of trial and error with different local dealers, my current dealer is excellent, but all of them should be like mine.

My experience with codes is that they stay in memory unless the battery is removed or fails???? So I think your dealer should be able to see that code.

and the manual also wants 500 miles on the driveline gears before towing.

This is what the manual says.

ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS
A long break-in period is not required for the
engine and drivetrain (transmission and axle) in
your vehicle.

Drive moderately during the first 300 miles
(500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km),
speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are
desirable.

While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration
within the limits of local traffic laws contributes
to a good break-in. Wide-open throttle
acceleration in low gear can be detrimental and
should be avoided.

There is a break-in period with a new engine and transmission and it is dumb to ignore this and start towing earlier. With my 2011 diesel 2500 the break-in period was 500 miles and with my 2022 gas 1500 truck it is 1000 miles.

Trucks from 2017 and later years have much tighter tolerances with the engines and so this is even more important.

Amazing that guys will spend $70,000 on a new truck and not bother to read the manual and then post their whiny complaints on forums.

Very helpful, thank you your majesty.
You have NO IDEA what the dealership told me when I asked them about towing. What, when, how.

If it is a stored code it will be in memory until the code is cleared manually, either by scan tool or disconnecting the battery.

You need to visit the manual's section under towing, towing requirements, and you will see this warning;

CAUTION!
• Do not tow a trailer at all during the first 500 miles
(805 km) the new vehicle is driven. The engine, axle
or other parts could be damaged.
• Then, during the first 500 miles (805 km) that a
trailer is towed, do not drive over 50 mph (80 km/h)
and do not make starts at full throttle. This helps
the engine and other parts of the vehicle wear in at
the heavier loads.
