Acceptable or not for brand new 2018 truck purchased with 49 miles and now has 150 miles. Just now catching this a week after purchase. Factory warranty coverage? Lifetime warranty coverage? DEALER coverage?? Trying to figure out what part that is.

Pretty much all the drive shafts look like that. would be nice if they would paint them.

Yeah dude, totally normal. My 2014 does not look nearly that bad at all YET, but who knows where that truck was sitting before you picked it up. You would think they would factory paint them, but they are definitely not in the business of appeasing us **** Ramforum members who actually comb through the bottom of our truck with a magnifying glass. Most people don't care or even realize it for that matter. Lol.

Normal. I cleaned mine off, coated it with some rust inhibitor then gave it a light coat of paint.

Wow!! NEVER woulda guessed that’s normal!! Thanks so much guys!! Not sure I’ll start scraping it, but think I’ll spray something on it not sure what yet I do have this textured spray coming in maybe that.

Still gonna shoot dealer email who sold it to be out of curiosity. So weird how it happens so fast.

The guy who’s said he has 2014 not nearly as bad, it’s been 4 more years so this obviously must be pretty bad.

I guess if it started corroding then it would be replaced. These must come from near ocean.

The guy with the 4 year old truck lives in Florida, not much salt on the roads there. Go get any piece of raw steel, stick it outside and let me know how long it takes to look just like that.

Before you send an email to the dealer and get laughed at, chalk it up to completely normal and forget about it. Coat it with something if it bothers you enough, but I can guarantee you the dealer wont do anything about a rusty driveshaft.

Perfectly normally. Wire brush the rust off and paint it. Absolutely no point in getting the dealer involved nothing they can really do.

Shot him an email just so it’s a record hah. Just never seen this on any past cars. I get it though, happy to find out it’s nothing to be considered about!! Thanks.

I was surprised when I got this '10 ram that it even had a a steel driveshaft...
My '98 sport had an aluminum one..I guess that's normal nowadays?
I just assumed everything newer had alum. as well.
was it because it was a sport?

Not sure why it being a sport would make a difference? I guess more support and stability and longevity and safety in steel. I’m not opposed to it at all, just wasn’t sure initially and figured a cheap coating wouldn’t hurt. Who knows.

I have a 2017 1500 Limited 4 x 4 with 11,000 miles on it, does not look new but it doesn’t look nothing like that. With 14 miles on it I would go by the dealership, look under other vehicles, if they’re all like that in your area then it is what it is. If not I would have that changed out, that’s excessive in my opinion.

What are those shafts made out of on the half tons? I just dragged my drunk ass outside and climbed under my truck because I was super confident my drive shaft had zero rust on it but it's a 2500. Must be aluminum. Seeing how it could be, I think you have a valid complaint.

Seems like they said steel? Why would the 2500 be aluminum though? Lighter? I’ll let you guys know when he gets back to me!

Mine looked similar. I sanded it with a scotch Brite pad, cleaned with brake cleaner, and sprayed it with Rustoleum High Gloss Enamel grey. Done!!!!
