I agree they shoud be aluminum or powder coated or atleast give options on the build--I don't know whether it affects the longevity but mass production on these driveshafts shoudnt add much to the build and would be something RAM could brag about.

Drive shafts are a solid core part, not hollow so it will never rust through, so you definitely don’t need to worry about that.
A driveshaft is about the thickness of exhaust tubing and is very much hollow. Maybe you mean the axle shafts, which are solid.

Yes there are some manufacturers that make hollow core but for larger vehicles it’s usually solid core. And the hollow core are just a bit thicker then exhaust tube.

Hah appreciate it but seems like a waste as that’s only for noise. It falls off one day from corrosion it falls off. Drivetrain on the other hand, don’t want that taking a **** on me, sorta need that LOL

I've seen brand new 0 miles vehicle steel driveshafts look just like that. I've never heard of one rusting to the point of it being an issue.

We actually had a 1990 Chevy W/T long bed years ago that had a fiberglass or some type of plastic material driveshaft. It eventually swelled and got so badly out of balance we had to have a steel one made for it!

Sorry if it's been mentioned, but I've seen it recommended that you never scrape/paint a driveshaft, given it has the potential of throwing it off balance. IMO, that would take a LOT of paint to do so. If it really bothers you, paint it.

I do not believe this to be true. Are you sure they are solid? Hollow tube is stronger than a sold core...

Do all of the 2500s have an aluminum driveshaft?

Other than the driveshafts and axle shafts on my '17, everything else is rust free. I hit the underside of the whole thing (along with inner door areas, fender dog legs, etc) with Corrosion Free Rust Cure a month after buying the truck and plan on doing the same once a year until I get rid of the truck (if I ever do).

Hard to say for sure with there being so many different combinations of options and HD models, but I think maybe the long bed trucks got steel and also depending on the transmission the truck had. Maybe now all have been converted to aluminum.

just to give you a time frame of how quickly rust sets in, wash your truck in the driveway and check the disks the next am. if you don't drive it after you wash it guaranteed to have rust on disks. so, 100% normal for any metal to be rusty after just a coupe months. even the ones sitting at the dealer will already be rusty.

Yea wasn’t aware how quick it would happen to steel. Guess it’s good it’s steel, but possible for it to eventually over the years eat through it and cause little holes to start appearing?

Don; worry about that. Otherwise, all those 100+ yr old Railroad bridges would have collapsed by now.

I have never seen a solid drive shaft in all my years of shortening and lengthening and twisting them.
