not inside.i mounted mine to a receiver that bolts to the towhooks.easier and cheaper, and i can mount it to the rear receiver by unplugging and moving to the rear, which i've had to do a couple times already.or i can leave it in the garage if i'm not off roading.

I was just researching this as well. seems you can order the OEM parts for a power wagon, which will fit the non PW 2500 but overall with the winch you're looking easily close to 3000 bucks to do it.

umm,how exactly??it's attached to the frame *******.

Not if it's attached to the tow hook mounts. The tow hooks are attached to a cross member that is easily bent (along with the bumper). You'll taco your bumper if you pull anywhere close to the winch rating unless you bought a small winch. The PW winch mounts to the frame horns and will hold double the truck's weight.

Yea I found a site that list all the oem parts. For the money they want it's not worth it. If I want one that bad I'll buy a new bumper with the winch mounted directly.

Thanks. Been looking for a way to transport bikes while pulling the travel trailer without putting them in the trailer or voiding the trailer warranty and hanging them off the back bumper.

This beats a receiver hanging under the bumper.

The OE tow hooks are rated for 5500 pounds OR 1.5 times the trucks GVW.

According to these instructions...

http://www.moparonlineparts.com/docs/82212185AB.pdf

They bolt onto the ends of the frame.

According to that break down the tow hooks don't bolt directly to the frame. For a bike rack or other relatively low weight applications the front receiver is fine. 5500lb is well below gvw and the receiver has a max tow rating of 9000lb. A winch exceeds both.

Starting at step 10, that sure looks like the frame to me. NOT a cross member.

Or is it because they are bolted to a bracket that is bolted to the frame?

Where does the cross member come into play?

You are aware that a 10,000 pound winch only generates that 10,000 of line pull on the first layer on the drum, right? 2nd layer drops the pulling capacity to 7900, 3rd to 6500 and 4th to 5600.

The hooks bolt to the brackets. I called them a cross member but they're two pieces. If you do a search, members have pulled the hooks hard enough to bend the bumper. Attaching anything to the tow hook bolts is not actually bolting to the frame directly. Its good that you're only exceeding the max rating of the front receiver hitch for only one wrap of the drum...I guess. Most HD owners that buy winches usually buy the bigger models though.

If you need a 15000lb winch, buy a correctly rated bumper. The receiver mount is not rated for the strength of the winches commonly used with HD's.

Alright, I just received the tow hooks I ordered (my truck didn't come with the tow hooks) and the hitch mentioned earlier in this thread should be here tomorrow I believe.

There isn't much to them and the mounts sandwich the frame with no spacers on the inside. Not very beefy for a tow hook mount.

I did google "dodge ram bent bumper pulling tow hooks" and got 1 hit so far that mentions a bent bumper. Looks like all that happened was the mount moved since the mounting holes are slotted to align the bumper. Not really the best thing to happen given what a tow hook is supposed to be for, but it doesn't look like the bumper bent.

Oh.... And I do agree. If I was going to mount a winch on the front, I would buy a bumper to mount the winch on.

I just got my kit myself, and I'm stumped on what size the bolts going through the end assembly are. Between a 15mm and 14 mm in size. Since all I'm installing is the two small reinforcing brackets, i figured i may be able to get away with doing one side at a time by removing both the bolt assembly and nuts, installing the brackets to both sides, then reinstalling the bolt/nuts while supporting that side with a jackstand. How did you do it?

I just got in from putting these and the hitch on.

I pulled the bumper as per the instructions. If you had a helper I suppose to could bypass pulling the bumper by having someone hold it up when you pull the bolts that support the bumper bracket to the frame. Or set it on a jackstand. It shouldn't roll if the other side is still attached.

I was also wrong about there being a crush sleeve inside the frame, there is.

Overall I'm not impressed with the engineering of these towhooks given the nature of the truck. 2 bolts are all the hold each bumper bracket to the frame and the tow hooks bolt to the bumper bracket. I can see where some folks think they have bent their bumper when using the tow hooks and the bumper brackets move. There is adjustment in the bumper brackets to align the bumper with the body.

If anyone has purchased an aftermarket winch bumper I would be interested to see how it is mounted to the frame.
