I’m nearing 80k miles on my 2014 Ram Hemi and the cam/lifter failures I have read about concern me going forward.

Please list your mileage currently, failure mileage if you had it and mfg year. I’m hoping to read some no issues responses over 100k miles!

Is this blown out of proportion about the cam/lifter failures?
Happened twice March of 2020 cam and lifters, then Feb 2021 engine replacement 56,000 cam and lifters again. They had truck 46 days.

I think the cam failure is vastly overblown for people who have normal use and regular maintenance.
I expect to keep my truck until either the pistons implode or ICE is banned.
And when the engine does give out...it's Hellcrate time!

Supposedly they changed valve lifter vendors and/or design in 2017 in attempts to reduce failures. I have seen no info on if that was successful.

Use Red Line 5W-30 for band aid.

2013 cam/ lifter replaced at 140,000. Has 192,000 now and not a problem. Redline oil and RP oil filters since. This is what it sounded like.

My 2014 ate a lifter at 180,000 and now some other knocking sound from the bell housing inspection plate. The knocking can only be heard from idle to 1200ish RPM. Any info on that knocking sound would be awesome.

I have a 2010 1500 Laramie with 268k on the odometer. I hear a faint tick in the engine, but the biggest issues I've had have been with the rear dif, leaky 3rd brake light and weak ac output on the driver's side.

My niece and her husband just drove off in my 03 2500 Hemi 5 speed stick I sold to them when I bought a used 2014 Cummins about 18 months ago . Still
going strong at over 300,000. The only engine work was some upper throttle body stuff done around 50k. Nothing internal.
Just drove off as in 10 minutes ago .

I just traded a 2015 with 106k. Regular old oil at 5000 miles. It was running strong and they gave me $25k for it. Of course I bought another 5.7 Hemi not e torque.

2011 5.7 had to replace cam and lifters at 156k. I’m now up to 157k with no issues since the new cam.

I have a 2011 Ram Sport, bought it new, and the lifter/cam issue hit mine a little over 92,000 miles. This happened in April of 2017, a little out of the 5 year warranty, but under the 100,000 mile power train warranty. Ram Cares made an arrangement with me to pay to fix it if I would pay a 10% co-pay. That was a no brainer. I paid a little over $300.00 to get my truck repaired. I now have about 143,000 miles on the truck and have not had any issues with it.

2016 bighorn, bought with 45k miles…. Now have 11k, and misfire cyl 3…. Both cyl 1 & 3 had junky plugs(55k on them) so I threw new plugs in those cylinders and a new coil on #3. Anytime above 3000rpm cel flashes…. I’m guessing the lifter ate the cam!! My dealership quoted me 6000 for cam replacement! Personally idk what I’m gonna get if I even try to trade it in!

its honestly not that hard... a couple hours and your heads are off... Get the OEM hellcat lifters from summit for 400$. AD lifters, non mds. You can remove MDS if you want. Cams are cheap... just have to make sure not too much damage happened. clean out the vvt valve... flush the pan if you have to (stick a tube down there maybe) run a magnetic oil pan plug if you dont have one. might do an oil pump while your down there. As long as you caught it fairly early.

I did the mds delete and installed a Jay Greene camshaft when I got the "tick" at 89,000. When I pulled the lifters out, there was nothing wrong with them. Camshaft same. It had been an exhaust manifold leak. If I hadn't been installing a performance cam anyway, I would have been mad at myself for jumping the gun and not going through the proper diagnosis procedures and ruling out catastrophe processes. It would have been easy to hold a length of hose up to my ear and then move the other end around the exhaust manifold flange. Food for thought I guess
