The cam/lifter problems didn't seem to start until the redesign in 2009 with 2011 being the most popular year. More than likely your tick is from broken exhaust manifold bolts which is common in all 5.7 HEMI's regardless of age. If the tick goes away in less than 10 seconds its an oil related tick. If it takes like a minute or more then its most likely broken bolts. If you're not already running 5W30 I would switch to that at a minimum to help with valvetrain noise.

I just bought an 07 model that has 160000 miles, so far no noises. I don't know for sure what oil the original owner used but I will be using a 5w Pennzoil brand of some type. I am not sure which one yet though.

If the MDS is active it calls for 5W20. Deviating from that can cause system errors. If MDS has been disabled then 5W30 is perfect.

How do you deactivate the MDS?

How can I tell if mds is active or inactive on my truck? bought it used

If you have an aftermarket exhaust you can hear once you get to a steady speed/pedal position (or using cruise control) on level ground. If you have the stock exhaust you probably won't be able to hear it, best bet at that point would be to either take it to a dealer/shop so they can plug in live while it drives and verify or get a tuner to see if it has been optioned off. Difference here is depending on the tuner it may not load if MDS is disabled because that means some kind of tuning is still installed.

I heard that 5w30 Redline is ok to use with active MDS. Will the engine throw a code or is there a chance damage to the cam/lifters?

Good for you lol? I said can, not will. In most cases not using the prescribed weight oil has caused MDS malfunctions. Most of these reported cases were on the LX platform, as in the early days of Ram MDS most people would immediately disable it lol.
