I installed a UPR catch can from Nick at got exhaust right after picking up my brand new truck. It's a 2021 ram 1500 v8 4x4 crew cab 6.4ft bed with 3.92 Gears and some mods.

Here are some pics of what I found 422 miles in. I swear I read to check it every 300-500miles so that's why I did it today.

I didn't notice anything in the oil and as you can see there wasn't much in there.

Yours and my 18 are doing quite well. I used the same catch can on my 08 Jeep and had to empty it much more. That thing burned/sucked oil like nobody's business. At least a quart every 3k, even when it only had 30-40k on it. Had 150k when a deer took it out.

I emptied my catch can out at every oil change
That was with my 2009 Ram SLT Hemi
I sold it with 140,000 miles on it & even then, it was never full when i emptied it

Can you imagine if all that oil had entered the intake, instead of being caught in the catch can
The build up inside the engine where there should only be gasoline would be terrible

Personally I check it every 1500 miles. Most people do every oil change from what I see but I like to do it more often. Even though what you see in yours is minimal it is good to see that in just 422 miles that was caught. That would of been going back through your intake, throttle body, intake manifold, etc....In the colder months be sure to keep the intervals small as you will get condensation contributing to the amount in the can.

Depends alot on how you drive it.If you drive it like Grandpa you won't find much in it,but if you drive it like you stole it,and love to put those 395 ponies to work every once inawhile, you'll find more in the can. Easy drivers don't really need a catch can,but hard drivers definitely should have one.

I was looking to add one to my RAM but how do dealerships react to us installing catch cans? Talking more about warranty than anything else.

Is there really a true benefit of an oil catch can? Many say there is no benefit what so ever.

Didn't cost too much and took like 10min to install for a bone head like it. Even if it doesn't do much at least I feel good about doing it lol...

I usually check mine between 1,000-2,000 miles and get about 2 tbs of oil. Last check was after about 6,400 miles (got busy and forgot :( ) and had a lot more obviously and noticed some gunk in the bottom after I poured out the oil. Just FYI

I put a catch can on my 2018 2500 6.4 when it had 1500 hundred miles on it. Now I have 24000 miles on my new truck and never got a drop of oil in the can. It just looks pretty I guess.

Well you make a good point, it cannot do any harm but I do not see what good one really does. I was just asking to learn more not trying to be obstinate in any way I assure all. I have one on the 2018 Scat Pack put on myself when the Scat was new with like 125 miles on the motor. It now has 52000 on it and I have almost filled a 20oz Coke Bottle. But not sure if it really done any good or not for the 392 motor, but the Gunk in the bottle is really nasty!

First question is how did you put a catch can on a 2500's 6.4 when they don't have an external PCV system. The HD trucks with a 6.4 use an internal PCV system,so that would explain why you never got anything in the can. There are no external lines to plumb a catch can onto a trucks 6.4,you can on the cars 6.4 as they use a differant PCV system, which is basically the same as the 5.7 trucks use, which has external PCV lines that you can plumb a catch can inline ,no such lines on a HD truck 6.4.

I put a catch can in my 2019 1500 Classic and it caught quite a bit of watery oily liquid gunk in the year that I owned that truck. Took it out when I traded it in for 2021 1500 Classic and reinstalled in the new truck.

Never filled it but half full at oil change time.

You have to remember all that gunk it catches would otherwise go right back to the intake and throttle body valve, where it ends up caking onto the back of it, causing crappy idle, slower acceleration response and generally rougher running less efficient engines. I don’t see how this would void any warranty, all it does is catch liquid from the exhaust EGR blowby gasses and takes oil and other junk out of the air that goes back to the intake and throttle body.

So not absolutely needed, but definitely a helpful add on and can’t hurt.

Thank you for explaining that.
Look through CrazyKids threads,he shows how he added a catch can to the 6.4 truck manifold when he installed the 6.4 intake manifold onto his 5.7.You have to mod the manifold so it'll utilize an external PCV system.Supposedly somebody on one of the high performance Ram facebook pages was going to come out with a kit ,that put a PCV valve into the oil filler cap,but i don't know if it ever took off.I forget who it was though.

Do y'all think a catch can might help reducing engine pinging? I normally sunday stroll my way through life, but I do tow in the summer months and cringe going up hills and inclines as it revs up to 3000+ rpms and really likes to chatter; like marbles shaken in glass jar. That's on 89 or even 91 octane, different stations too, doesn't matter it pings when it works hard.

I read that keeping that gunk out with a CC could help reduce it, just wondering if any of you have tried it and had success before I throw another $200 at it.

If you live in a state with no inspections, just plumb the PCV valve to atmosphere and plug the hole in the intake.
