I got my 2018 Power Wagon in December of 2019. It has around 30k on it right now. After I got it home I noticed the rear pinion seal was leaking. Not overly wet but oil and **** slung all over down there. Anyways the dealer replaced the seal. It's now around 7000 later and it's leaking again. Now one would think the dealer would figure this out but my local dealer sucks ass and the next closest one is a couple hours away. I'm going to give them another chance. Any particular causes? Bad crush washer? Plugged vent? Scored drive shaft yolk (or whatever the end is called)? Ideas appreciated.

Possible seal damage at install.Usually they put a thin film of rtv on outside edge of seal so unless it is a loose bad pinion? it may just be defective install would be my bet.

two times now? I've never had a truck go through two pinion seals in 30 thousand miles.

first of all you need to determine where its leaking from. could be getting past the splines. could be between seal lips and yoke. could be seal OD and housing bore. when you figure that out then youll have a better idea whats going on

I have found clogged vents causing seal leakage on a few different vehicles. Always check that first, then check for other sources and change the affected seal. Seems once they start leaking they won't stop.

Yeah I'm hoping they actually do something this time besides slapping a seal in it and calling it a day. morons.

I'll bet the Pinion Yoke has a score on it, bottom line its going to keep leaking until the yoke is replaced, be firm make them replace it.

chances of the yoke being grooved at 30k are extremely unlikely. border line impossible

this thread sure went in the toilet fast. first there was a leak. now theres not a leak. then a photo that doesnt seem to show any leak that i can tell but its a poor angle to say the least. then a statement about reporting a dealer for something but who knows what

I understand it is under warranty. However, most dealerships just don't have people skilled in dealing with driveline issues since they don't get many of them. A shop that specializes in drivelines has mechanics with much greater experience specifically in drivelines. They are trying to fix the issue to the best of their ability but they just don't have the ability. Sometimes it is just less aggravating to to pay a specialist to fix it right. I am kind of picturing this scene at the dealership.

It'd be a real shame if somehow some gear oil got accidentally spilled on the leaking pinion seal before the next dealer visit.

haha. What's more odd is that I just put a few hundred miles on it after I cleaned all the oil and **** off and there's nothing now. It obviously leaked after the last seal replacement but has somehow stopped.............weird.

Maybe you just thought it leaked. Perhaps there was some oil residue under the edges that didn't get wiped down and it just soaked out like oil does.

You posted picture doesn't cause me to be alarmed. It's barely even damp and I would say that could have been residual oil from the last pinion seal install. If it was glistening wet with oil, or drops of oil were forming then I'd say it's leaking.
