It was quite nasty. Bought the car new granted its a couple years old now but damn!

So i ordered the kit for my truck and plan on installing it tomorrow. Any idea how to clean the area / residue that would have otherwise been caught by the filter prior to installing? Or is that **** i am breathing in?

Yep. They get crazy nasty.

Makes you wonder how our Engine Air Filters can last like 30,000 miles, but the Cabin Air Filters only last 5,000-10,000 miles...
Does the Cabin Air Filter trap finer particulates or does the Engine Air Filter just intake "cleaner" air?

below the CAF, there should be a fan
It can be dropped & the area can be vacuumed up a bit

With you living out there in the Land of the Haboob
You should change your CAF 1 or 2 times a year, depending mostly if you have driven during a sand storm.

Almost every time that i am over in Casa Grande to Red Rock during July & August, i catch a sand storm
