CheapO Efan longevity

I have decided to add one of these to my truck and am trying to decide between a real Mopar one and the cheaper TYC or Dorman fans.
I have read in a few places that the cheap ones vibrate and I find it hard to believe that an out of balance Efan is going to last very long. Some have a lifetime warranty but that doesn't do much good if it takes a crap on you in the middle of the desert.

FYI, even the electric fan that came on your truck from the dealership probably has balance weights on it. The one I took off my truck had two small weights and one larger one. The TYC fan I bought had a single large balance weight on it. The weights are just small metal clips that go on the leading edge of the light blade.

Despite being weighted when it arrived, the TYC had some vibration to it. Using a sharpie marker, the weights off of my stock fan, and a little trial and error, I got it perfectly balanced. You just have to be vigilant and do it. Hell, you could buy a Mopar fan and run into the same issue I did with the TYC.

I'm going to swap my Mopar fan and blades into my tyc unit this weekend and basically buy it for the shroud.

TYC and Dorman are both good brands, I would have no problem replacing the fan with either.

In my old Corolla (Yeah, I know), I used a $20 universal 14" fan in leiu of the fan clutch. It operated flawless for over 3 years.

That might be more effort than it's worth. Why not just try out the TYC first. Hang on to your stock fan just in case. That's what I did.

I just might but I if I feel any vibration, I'm gonna swap it out immediately. It's not hard to do. A friend of mine has done it with no issues.

It's possible to induce vibration just by swapping it into the different shroud. You never know if you tweak a blade or the outer ring just a tiny bit, it could throw it off. Like I said, I just spent a little time with the weights I had at my disposal and got my TYC balanced. If it takes a crap some time down the road, at least I have my stock one still, and it's marked where I took the weight off of it to use on the TYC.

You would notice them. They are little metal clips. When I say weight, the first thing that comes to my mind are like tire balance weights, but these are more like tiny pieces of bent sheetmetal, very small amount of weight, but enough to remove imbalance. If you are handy enough, you could make some out of a metal jar lid or something like that. Wish I had a picture.

Ok 1 guy answered the question I asked and it crapped in 5 months, that looks like a 100% failure rate for the Elcheapo so far.

My TYC's motor just went out after almost 4 years and 50k miles, it started running rough and wouldn't get up to high speed. I happily replaced it with another $100 TYC.

Looks like you have a 2014 Ram so you don't need to switch out your fan.

While this is true. I would still agree that an actually true shroud around the fan itself is better than just the stock efan that's mounted to the radiator. For cooling purposes it's better. Is it needed? Not necessarily. I'm doing the conversion because I can't stand the massive factory shroud I have.

Don't know if a shroud is that much better for cooling purposes. I'm sure it's more for looks. Besides unless you do the active grill shutters delete then your not getting any more cooling then you are now. If your doing it for looks then just switch out for a Mopar one.

I have done the grille delete already and I have just completed this conversion today. The tyc fan had no balance weights at all and had some vibration upon running. So I swapped the Mopar motor and blade assembly into the tyc shroud. I modified the temp sensor like nick did and used what I needed for the block off plate from the hole. Btw the shroud may not help much but it will help some. The shroud will use the entire area of the radiator to pull air through instead of the circumference of the stock fan itself. So it will cool better but it's not going to be a huge gain and like I said before I did it more for the looks then the cooling advantages it has.
