So I have a question for you guys. I took the truck in for possible warranty work. I have provided the dealer a video of possible lifter tapping, have had 3 separate cylinder 5 misfire codes, and a general lack of power that comes and goes... So from my research it points to it being the Cam & Lifter issue commonly associated with the MDS system. I dropped it off last Tuesday night for a 10AM appointment on Wednesday. They just called me and left the following voicemail,

"... Just wanted to let you know that they heard the the noise, but he said it's actually counting misfire on every cylinder except for cylinder 8 and he's definitely going to need to tear it down to get into it to see for sure what the situation is. Chrysler warranty requires customer to authorize the tear down because if for whatever reason they get in there, and they don't cover the repair, they don't cover any part of it including tear down. So you have to authorize the tear down then once it gets torn down then we can send whatever pictures to Chrysler give them the report and they'll tell us whether or not it's still covered under power train. So the tear down is $840 that is applied to the cost of the repair, but I need your authorization to proceed. Thank you."

For clarification purposes, the truck is a 2015 Ram 5.7 with 72K on the clock. Which from what I've been told has a powertrain warranty up to 100K.

Now for my questions...

Is this normal procedure?
What could possibly be not covered under warranty?
Should I risk the possibility of it not being covered under warranty or take it to a different dealer?

If anyone has had experiences similar to this, please chime in and let me know.

I didn't know where else to put the video clip so I just uploaded it here:

If they find you did not change the oil , or that the oil is all fuggy inside. If they find sand, water, or other weird debris. If they find that you're intake had dirt or something in it, enough to cause damage. Basically they are saying if we find out that YOU caused this, we're going to charge you. It's perfectly normal. FCA does not just say no to warranty work unless it was a legitimate issue. If you're worried you did do something to pull yourself out of warranty, I'd be very careful of letting them move forward. They will keep the truck if you don't pay. onlyyou know if you did something.

I went down this road last year with my 2012 RAM 1500 that had to have the cam replaced due to a stuck lifter on cylinder 8. I had a third party warranty cover the rebuild but almost all warranty companies will require documented proof of proper maintenance, especially if they find anything internal to the engine that could be caused by a lack of proper maintenance. For me, I used a local Jiffy Lube for all oil changes since I know the owner. Proof of all maintenance via computerized records were easy to provide as a result. If you do your own maintenance, make sure you keep all purchase receipts for all materials for this purpose. Plan for the worst, hope for the best type approach.

Well, I suppose you all wished me enough luck. Just heard back from the dealership and it was a bad lifter. Warranty is covering the repair and I'm happy I'll get my truck fixed.

I was worried since I bought the truck used, I was unaware of what the previous owner may of had done/not done to it.

Thanks for all the replies, will keep updated if anything unexpected happens. In the meantime I can't wait until I can drive her again.

Ok. So I’m a technician for dodge Chrysler and Jeep. Out of my many years with FCA now I’ve never heard of getting authorization for power train warranties. It is absolutely NOT required for warranty through Chrysler.

However if it is an AFTERMARKET warranty then yes, this is a normal thing.

But when I do a cam and lifter job that’s under warranty I’ve never asked for rear down.

That’s odd

Yeah it felt a little odd to me as well. I'm starting to get a little annoyed as they have had my truck for a month come tomorrow since we're waiting for parts (Heads) that are on back order.

Any idea what's caused the hemi cam/lifter failures that you've seen?

What I was told happened with mine is that the lifters were the root cause of the problem. Lifters ate into the cam and then the valves went out as well, although I couldn't hear her very well so I don't know what happened with them.

Regardless, we are still waiting for the heads. FCA has pushed back the availability date to June 26.

I'll post a quick video of what I heard later.
I've had the exhaust manifold leaks fixed before and I can tell you this was a bit different. 30 secs after start-up a loud tick came out of nowhere for 6 secs and then disappeared. I never heard it while driving although I could feel something as if I had a slight misfire.

I talk to a guy who knows the engineers , and that was their explanation to me. The cam was the cause. Who knows lol

I was talking to a mechanic at a ram dealer that at the time had 3 cam jobs in 1 week. I ask him what he thought the cause was. He said he thought in his opinion it was extended oci. From what I've seen and been able to find out the olm doesn't know the difference between conventional or synthetic oil, the only thing it basically monitors is usage habits and adjusts accordingly. My olm operates at 10% per 1000 miles, so with that no matter what oil I'm using it would be 8000 miles to get me to 20%. In my opinion running conventional oil 8000 miles is absolutely ridiculous, I don't even run synthetic that far. I think the olm is a stupid idea and people that believe in them, well, not going to name call.

That's 4000 miles farther than I go with pup. If I used conventional, I would go 4000 miles and send a sample to Blackstone labs.
