Click in steering wheel

I have an 07 1500 that has a click in the steering wheel. This gives it a little play. It's not in the rack. Feels like it's in or if not very close to the steering wheel itself. It started when I was on a long road trip and hasn't gotten worse but there is a notchiness to it almost like one tooth on a gear is grinded down so sometimes it grips but sometimes it slips causing the click or notch

Check the “universal” joint at the rack on the steering shaft.
