Had my windows down the other day and noticed a clinking/metallic sound that seems to becoming from front left side under my truck. 2018 RAM 1500 with 26k miles. Don't always hear it. Comes and goes. Can't hear it at all with windows up and A/C going.

Doesn't make the sound when idling. Only does it when truck is moving, seems sporadic. Any ideas?

Rock or debris in the rotor or breaks? Wheel bearing? Uca? Tie rods? Ball joints? I would say it being a grinding sound it's something in motion so breaks or wheel bearing would be where I start. Is it 4x4? Front axles maybe? Could have torn boot that allowed debris in.

Try jacking up the front wheels and spinning them. That's the easiest way to determine.

I was thinking maybe wheel bearing... Vehicle is not a 4X4...

It could also be the vibration dampers that are on the outside of the frame rails just below the front doors.

Why would those make a metallic sound though?

they are rubber mounted if one of the mounts is bad it could be the cause. I would just look them over to rule out a possible cause as it is easy to inspect and easier to correct if found bad. Since you didn't state that it happens under a certain driving characteristic and its not present when sitting still. I would start there then go to the more intrusive stuff like calipers, rotors, and suspension.

Ok just to clarify I'm not doubting you, just trying to learn. [emoji6]

Sway bar links or a dry ball joint is my guess.

So get this, I think it's the brake dust shield. the thin metal piece that sits on the front of the rotor, between the rotor and interior of the vehicle. Took the wheel off and it appears to be coming from there. Tapped and held shield no sound, released it tapped assembly, cling! Should this be something covered under warranty? I would take it apart myself but I'm not good with wheel assembly/brakes etc.

Brandon I'm guessing outward, away from the rotor?

Yes. Sometimes all it takes is sticking a flat s dew driver in there and giving a slight push not much to make it smarten up. Sometimes the inner edge where the e brake sits gets rusty and makes the metal expand and rub on the rotor as well. Being an 18 I don't see that. Warranty should cover it. My diesel did this awhyle back. Drove me insane.

Hi TexNorseman,
We understand why this may be concerning. We suggest having your dealer inspect this concern. We are also available via private message if you would like any additional assistance during that process.
