Shutters open after 160-170 degrees from my testing, not sure what the logic programmers say but may have speed dependent variables.

16 ram sport 4x4....Yesterday i removed my clutch fan..Easy....Spins off to the right while looking at the trk from the front....No other mods other than throttle body, new air filter and a 17" magna flo muffler running a 91 can diablo tune...
Reset my mpg gauge and the mileage and drove about 40ish miles(68 mph for 10 mi and the rest @ 62)Notice a lil extra kick in the pants when i stepped on it and my mpg was up 9 10th of a mpg based solely on what dash shows as fuel burn...Before the clutch fan removal i never saw about 22 mpg(based on the dash)and that was babying it,not towing and on cruise),basically the same yesterday evening i managed to pull almost a full 1 mpg just by that one mod......My temps varied from 197-206 for a min then steadied to 197-203....I still have active shutters in it to...I would have to check my tuner to see what fans are set at to come on but i assume its in the 203 area..

For what it's worth, the fan you have already on your '17 is exactly the same as the fan you're looking to replace it with, I think they upgraded it on the '14 and up rams. I just did this on my '18, I purchased the V6 fan and other than a little bit better shrouding, it's the exact same motor. Honestly all you need to do is get rid of the clutch fan, the electric fan will work fine. If you wanted to go with a 180 degree t-stat then you'd probably want a tune to set the fan kick on temp lower. I can tell you with very spirited driving in hot temps my '18, with a 180 t-stat NEVER gets hot and the stock fan is more than enough to cool the motor.

The outer shroud of the newer or v6 fans may be different than whats on the trk as new...It basically forces more air through rather than possibly around the fan for efficient cooling..

I got about 20 MPG going 76mph on road trip over the weekend.

Coolant temps stayed around 185-186, oil temps around 200-204.
Outside temp was 95 most of the way.

I should have done it a long time ago.

Yeah both fans have the same motor but V6 fan blades have a larger radius with different pitch that moves more air with its shroud.

Finally got my pwm controller in and temp sensor for the controller. Think I may have ordered the wrong hose fitting now that it’s here. Ordered 1.75”. Guess I’ll find out this weekend if it’s not raining. 180 tstat should be here by than

Be curious if that will work as I have a Pentastar PWM fan that I thought could work through programming through a tuner. It did not. Keep us posted

I think my hardest part will be finding a place to mount the controller. It’s 6”x5”

Gives me full control of the fan without using a programmer. It’s a fan speed controller that regulates based on coolant temp so the hotter the coolant the faster the fan will spin based on what I set the temp to to try and maintain that temperature

Since that is a standalone unit, I'm curious how you're going to satisfy the factory PCM feedback requirements.

I’ve disconnected the fan and tested and didn’t get a cel. As long as I don’t pull the relay I haven’t had any issue

I can understand saving an output to verify the electric fan is working when the main fan is mechanical. Figured it was polka-yoked because it is the emergency method of cooling.

I have the mechanical pulled from my truck and let the electric fan run from the ac and have no problems. Disconnected the electric fan and let the truck get to 210 with ac on and the condenser kicking on and off. As soon as I plugged the electric fan back in it turned on. Assuming the relay was in and no load and no cel I don’t think the truck senses the fan. I do know if you pull the relay you get a cel

Had a little interruption. Florida weather. Still have to tie in the condenser 12v power to the ac 12v input on the controller to turn the fan on max when the ac is on. Everything else is working well. Fan turns on and runs low speed and speeds all the way up to max speed as needed. Looking at getting a vararam intake but may just stick to the s&b

ahh. Ok..

Wonder if the truck will stay cooler even when it's really hot.

That’s exactly what I’m hoping. We have a hot one here today. Currently 93° with a Feel of 107° getting ready to take the truck out. The fan runs low speed if I’m not under load. Spins faster the hotter the coolant gets. Supposedly it won’t run or will run really slow during higher speeds unless my ac calls for the fan because the air flow from driving should be enough to keep the coolant temps down.

How did you pick what PWM controller to use? I see that there various brands to possibly use...
