can anyone tell me if there is a common cause of the P0456 code. Or where I might start looking for this apparent leak.
Thanks for your time!

The ESIM is a common failure, if there is no leaks that is. Check the gas cap seal as well.

Look for any damaged hoses. To properly test for a leak you need a smoke machine.

Esim, Hoses, gas cap, and purge solenoid under the hood. Not in any particular order but those were the items I was looking over when I got that code. I changed the purge solenoid and light came back. I changed the gas cap and light came back. I did not get around to swapping the ESIM or having a smoke test done but after about a month and a half to two months the code went away on its own.

I've been chasing this leak for 6+ months. Seems like every part I changed out, the light stays off for a few weeks to a month and then it's back. Only thing are the lines... which all look fine, and the actual canister on top of the fuel tank. It runs perfectly fine.

Same here. On and off for 3 years. Fuel cap and no change. Weeks later, gone for months. Over and over.

That's because the parameters for the small leak test to run are very specific and it may take weeks or a couple months to complete fully. Fuel volume has to be at the right level, ambient temp, amount of engine off/run time has to be right etc. The list of necessary parameters is quite lengthy, and if any of them are not right then the test wont run. It also needs to fail the test like 3 or 4 times in order to set the CEL. That's why the code can be cleared and it may not return for some time. It's not that the problem is fixed, it just hasn't failed the small evap leak test yet.

I hate evap codes. I've been chasing a P0441 for years now. I replaced the Purge solenoid, gas cap, and fuel tank pressure sensor. It will still show up as a pending code and then clear itself. It's only set a CEL once and that was before I changed the parts listed above.

As long as I can get my MA inspection sticker every year I just ignore it.

Mine was a gas cap. I put new one on and still after a a week or so got code. I used obd to clear also. I ended up disconnecting battery for an hr and it cleared up the next day or so after driving and another tank of gas.
