Use power steering fluid. Never use another car companys ATF. Use Hydrulic fluid which is clear in color. The only reason ATF is red is from the Dye they put in it. For IDing it when its leaking or on the dip stick.
Mopar had a TSB telling owners to be careful and not change ATF just because the fluid looks brown. It must also small burnt to be burnt. The dye used failes after a period of time and turns brown.
Most ATF's have fine grit for the tranny clutches. And that will harm the P/S pump.

As title remember the n the owners manual and factory service manuals they even said to use either.
Except for. 1 year I forget which fluid they said "Do NOT" use, the next year it was OK again.

I chased down some power steering fluid information for all pre-1998 models in the chemical catalog lookup. The part niumber is 04883077 and the product identification is MS-5931. The product is labeled Power Steeering Fluid and is clear. I now have one on the shelf. For Canadian folks it is sold at Canadian Tire Corp under the shelf number 038-0622-2. Thanks to all who helped me out with this issue.

lol i guess it depends on how often you have to top it up lol. i have run everything from atf to 15w40 and haven't had a pump or steering box fail. my dad has even told me he has run gear oil in them when he had nothing else. apparently the gear oil sucks till it warms up but is fine after that.
