sucked water in and bent a connecting rod(s). Still runs fine and no visible damage but severe racheting noise/knocking.

Only let it run for a few seconds immediately after it occurred, to diagnose noise and prevent furthger damage.

Ballpark cost to have engine repaired, ?

Vs.

Swapping junkyard engine with close to same miles

I burned a rod bearing two years ago and at that time the dealership quoted me parts and labor about 4K for a used engine, 6K for a reman and 8K for a brand new 5.7 from the factory. I did find a junkyard Hemi for just over 2K but since my block was ok I decided to rebuild it instead.

How much did it end up costing to rebuild instead? Since it ended up being ok

I joined this Forum and went from a stock rebuild to forged pistons, headers, torque converter and cam. With the tuner and the bill from the machine shop everything came in at just over 7K but it was worth it. :D

And how much more peppy is the ol mega cab now? I was thinking doing similar to what you did in about 50k miles. It's either that or buy a new truck, and a rebuild with Mike build on a 5.7 is way cheaper than a new 2500 Cummins. :D

With the cam and the custom tune it drives like a different truck. I gained about 50HP and 35ftlbs of torque, you can really feel it above 3500 RPM.

It only gave you 50 extra HP?? What cam did you go with? I've been looking at a spartan and with the proper tuning the cam job alone is getting an extra 35-40 to the ground from dyno runs I've seen.

This is all in theory because I haven't had it on a dyno but I might be getting it dyno tuned before winter, the tune that's in there now still isn't perfect.

Crazy Jay Plus - +45HP (quoted from Stu at Inertia)
.020" overbore - +4HP
Shorty Headers - +5HP?

I might have gained a little from the pistons too. Also he sent me a Spartan plus by mistake but I'm assuming the HP numbers are approximately the same.

You should get some chrome badges from Auto Zone... they are supposed to (in theory), give you and 10HP per badge I think... at least that's what I was told by the guy's down in the barrio.:roflsquared:

How much did it cost to get bored over?
What was your overall cost for the whole build?

Were they both toast? With that price it seems suspect that there's big problems with it.
No. He bought two salvage title trucks from the auction and is using the body from one to fix the other.

At that price I would have went with a 392 stroker rotating assembly.

i don't think I paid near as much to rebuild mine to 392 with forged components...i'll have to price it all out... except fpr block machining, i did all the work myself and saved lotsa money there...

Beautiful! Can't wait for a price sheet ;)
I wanna' put one of those under my hood.
Just tell me how :D I can live without a running truck for a while, especially if that's the end result!
