I currently run a 2012 6 speed with the 3.55 and I'd like to drop a tuner in it. I was thinking of going with an 89-91 octane tune to boost my low end performance but I'm worried I'll take a big hit on my wallet at the pumps. Admittedly, I've been cheaping out on 87 octane so far. But I've read that year on year you actually don't end up spending more money on gas because the tune plus higher octane is more efficient in the long run. True? And thoughts on Bullydog vs Diablo?

diablo with a jay green custom tune. I run the 93 tune and get 16 to 17 in the city and 23 to 24 on the hwy with MDS off and is pretty damn quick for a 6000 pound truck my father in law has same truck with a Hemifever tune and gets about the same mileage

does that make up for the added price/gallon for you at the pump?

I've only ran it with an 87 tune with MDS off and the stock tune a very short amount of time so I can't really say its worth it but I will tell you that the difference in the jay green 87 tune and the stock tune is a big difference so you might just be happy running and 87 custom tune and turning MDS onyou will just have to run the tunes and see what you prefer. I'm personally not worried about the extra at the pump . when I first started getting my truck tuned i was just wanting a little extra power and running the 87 tune and now I only run the 93 its more fun. get one and you will see what I mean.mine is a 2015 8 speed with 3.92 yours being a whole different year ,gear and trans you might not get the same outcome you might get better or worse. I think the MDS system is a little better on the newer ones so that could be a factor also.

Second that in regards to the better fuel mileage with a tune. Running a Hemifever and I do a lot of HWY driving averaging 22+ With that being said I didn't tune for better fuel mileage and was happily surprised at the outcome. Don't know if it washes with the higher octane price tag.

When you get a tuner monitor knock retard. When you see how much timing gets pulled with 87 octane and you see it go away with 91 octane you'll be sold too. I don't care what the cost difference is. I view knock sensors as a safety net. I don't want to rely on them to make the engine run correctly daily.

I've seen improved HWY mileage with tuners and premium fuel. Around town not so much.

While this is true, even on 93 there is still a lot of knock retard that goes on aka "false knock."

Not if you fix your vibrations :happy107:

lots of things can cause false knock and subsequent knock retard....Loose /broken manifold bolts, cracked manifold, loose exhaust clamp, worn engine mounts, out of balance driveshaft, u-joint going out, front wheel bearing going out, warped rotors, rough roads.....anything that causes a vibration that isn't the engine knocking will cause false knock.

Definitely don't need bigger injectors until you start boosting. Depends on what you want out of the tuner. If you're going to just run the canned tunes it really doesn't matter a whole lot. Diablosport is the most common when custom tuning is desired.
