Is there physical damage to the sensor?

Can you tell me what happens when this sensor is out? I'm trying to help a friend with his 2004 4.7 Ram. We replaced the heads and the timing is good but when it starts now it idles for a couple minutes and then dies off. It also has a hard time starting. It's throwing a P0344 code which is the camshaft sensor but we changed that too and still no luck.
