I've been wondering is it possible to change the rear suspension of the 3rd Gen trucks to the type the 4th Gen use? Probably not Spencer I've never heard anyone mention it but I thought it would be nice. The 3rd Gen are so rough I got to believe the 4th is smoother.

It is a whole lot smoother. I swear I've seen someone on a forum do this before. 5 link rear suspension is what it's called.

Its very possible. All the bagged trucks have to go to a 3, 4 or 5 link to lay out. It's a lot of work and very expensive though, unless you're a hell of a fabricator and can fabricate your own backhalf.

I bet a lot of jeep fab parts could be used
There are a lot of companies that make kits that are basically weld it together kits
You new to weld control arm mounts to the frame and axle
There's a bit of geometry for figuring out the control arm lengths but there are kits to weld together adjustable control arms
You would need supports for the coil spring on the frame and axle as well
Lastly you need a pan hard bar/track bar
It's a good bit of fabrication but definitly do able

Want it to ride smooth you need a set of these (HD 4/1 springs) with 0-4" lift shocks cause it gives you also 2" of lift, also a smooth quiet tire helps too (Duratracs).

But to answer the question IMO No can't be done, or if it can is prolly a PIA as you would need a donar Ram and prolly the rearend as well so not worth it.
Edit: Posted this after Codys Comments so Ya I stand with what I said as to me it could also end up Dog Tailing....too. if not well thought out.

That's an interesting idea about the new leaf springs except I don't want another 2" of lift. Infact if I could find a way to get my rear 2" lower and soften up the ride I'd be okay with that for sure. 2" drop would put it just about level with the front. Do they make a set of springs that would lower my rear and soften the ride?

I beleive if you add 2nd Gen Rear Shackles it drops a fellow 2 Inches. Rubberfrog had them on his 3rd Gen set-up. It was like night and day for me when I changed them but it ain't cheap with new shackles and shocks. Good Luck in your quest maybe you'll get some better ideas chime in.
