Took my 98,000 mile '15 V-6 to dealer for them to correct the mound of recalls, transmission whine and cam cover leak. The trans will whine when towing and under a load in 5th gear but I can make it whine if I brake hard, then accelerate moderately (cruise at about 60 mph, brake pretty hard down to 20 mph, then accelerate). It actually starts to whine when I hit the brakes.

When I checked the truck in, service writer said noise was normal because the ECU can't react that quickly to braking, then accelerating. Hmm, all this time, I thought computers were pretty fast.

They kept the truck two full days and when I picked it up the writer told me the "bump" in the tans I complained about was corrected with a software update. I told him I never mentioned a bump but a whine and I had to tell him the whole story again. He said, "its not throwing codes, so it is fine". I told him a whining trans is generally not considered fine. He said, "we are not going to do exploratory diagnostics on a transmission that works fine".

Regarding the oil leak, the passenger front of the head and below are oil stained and I've smelled oil many times. He said it was not leaking now so there was nothing to fix. He put dye in the engine and told me to come back in a week for more checking. They charged me a $145 diagnostic fee.

I've uploaded a sound bite and you can hear the trans whine. The recording really does not pick up the high pitch well at all. I'd say it is 3Xs more audible in the truck than on the recording.
I could take the truck to an real transmission repair shop and see what they say. Anyone else notice whine under these conditions? Any suggestions?

Clearly your dealer's service department is about maximizing throughput than customer service. All too common these days! Research other dealers in your area and see who has the best service reputation. Often times the smaller dealers are better at this because they depend so much on customer loyalty.

If it's a 4 year old Ram with -100,000 mi, (I think) it should still be covered by the original factory warranty. If the problem is diagnosed before warranty expired, it should still be covered. Someone jump in if I'm wrong about that. I'd make sure the whine is documented.

Thanks for the suggestions. I just looked over the "invoice" from dealer and they did not give the service tech the correct info in the "concern" section about the whine. No wonder tech could not duplicate. Amazing how poorly they write down info.

I will take it to another dealer and make sure they allow me to give the service writer or manager a ride. I can duplicate 100% of the time, so it should be simple for them to hear.

Hi 68Malibu383,

I'm sorry to hear of the trouble you are experiencing with your truck. If it would be of interest, I would be happy to escalate a case on your behalf to have this documented and connect you with a case specialist who can provide you with an additional layer of assistance as you work with your dealer. We're just a PM away if you'd like to proceed in this manner.

68malibu383, just a quick share in the event you need RAM to replace the trans. The dealer work order "write up" is critical to timely, effective repairs or if you want a buy back. Been through it twice. Never sign a work order at drop off until it states clearly the problem you brought it in for. If they will not write it up correctly, write in what you told them before you sign. Remember, it is the job of many dealers to avoid dealing with your complaint and avoid any track record of their behavior. It is why so many work orders read like the customer is a wack. RamCare agent can be effective help. Hope you get your trans resolved. Fitz

I too am getting a transmission whine the same as yours. I drive for 1/2 an hour at highway speed...the trans temp will climb to the 210-220 range. Then start whining.

On offramps I get a down-shift klunk from 8th to 7th and then she'll really whine. I had the transmission completely replaced 12K miles ago under warranty.

Hi jjjefferson,

Please let us know if you decide to address this with your local Ram dealer. We would be more than happy to have this documented and provide you with an additional layer of support for that process. We are just a private message away.

Keep us updated on this one!

I can't tell from the sound on your video clip. Sounds like my 2017 over my laptop speakers or earbuds.

The no code thing or no real driveabilily concerns is going to make for an extremely tough troubleshoot

The oil leak you speak of is almost certainly caused by the oil filter housing on your pentastar. It's about the only place you hear of them leaking oil from. Check some youtube videos out on that. Because that plastic housing/assembly is mounted in the valley of the engine block, it can literally pool like 2qts of oil in all the nooks and crannies in there until it starts running down the engine, mimicking a valve cover leak, etc..etc..

It's been at the local dealership for the last week....they finally got a service tech to look at it yesterday (on the 7th day....with an appointment a week earlier). I showed him photos of my trans temp rising to 217F on a flat highway in 68F weather with no load. Showed him multiple videos of "The Whine" where it only happens at 180+F on the transmission....then slowly climbs up to the same/more temp of the engine.

This is a pretty simple fix.....replace the transmission heater....it HAS to be the TBV (Thermal Bypass Valve) on the trans heating unit. Failure of that part will keep trans fluid from making to the radiator and cooling. If it is stuck closed....the trans temp will loop through the heater and just get hotter and hotter.

I am not a mechanic....but my job is solving problems on massively complex computer systems. After 30 years.....you tend learn how to break down a problem to its most likely cause....and there it is....the TBV on the transmission heater. All symptoms point directly to it!!! But because it does not "throw a code" I am confident....no problem will be found. FYI....the transmission was replaced 12,000 miles ago...a little less than 1 year....my initial complaints were dismissed...I had to drive it until it "threw a code" then it was fixed.

I just don't see buying another RAM in my future. And this is from a guy who owns 2000 Dodge Durango (178,000 and counting), 2006 Dodge Dakota (traded in at 150,000), 2013 Dodge Journey (84,000) and now a 2015 RAM 1500 (69,000) . Almost half a million miles in a Dodge/Ram....but they won't listen to me only the computer. SMH.

When I get it back...(anticipating a no-fix scenario)...I plan on clamping the host to the transmission heater shut.

Just for giggles....a fun video of an overheating tranny....with an empty bed and no trailer......enjoy.

Why not just replace the heater control unit yourself?

I get that it is under warranty and you shouldn't have too but, sadly, warranties are not worth anything anymore and it is the same across every manufacturer. If I have problems I expect it will be the same experience as yours. Deny, deny, deny, until your warranty has expired. Until people stop buying it won't change either.

Stories like this make me regret buying MaxCare Lifetime.

What good does it (or any warranty, for that matter) do if a dealer would rather keep their head in the sand and say "no CEL, no issue"

If I could get to the top of it....I would. I'm ready to just buy another unit for $110 and pay for the 1.8 labor hours to swap it out at this point. I won't be supporting RAM/FCA/Chrysler on my next purchase for sure.

Have you messaged @RamCares to get the issue with the dealership escalated?

I have the same noise on my ram, the dealer replaced the trans but when the noise didn't change they told me it was a normal characteristic of the 8 speed trans
