I am curious to know what everyone decided to buy when buying a new truck, gas or diesel and why? I have a 2015 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel myself and love it, I have heard good things about the 6.4 Hemi .

I decided to go with the 6.4. I couldn't justify to myself getting a Cummins since I only tow a camper a few times a year in the summer and i do alot of highway driving. If I did more towing i would of definently had gone diesel. Haven't towed anything with it yet but camping season is right around the corner.

I also just bought a 2014 ram 2500 midnight edition with the 6.4 hemi, I went gas only for the price difference. I love mine and have pulled a skid steer on a flat bed at 80mph with no problems. All I have done to it so far is put a magnaflow muffler on it.

When I bought new I compared the advantages/disadvantages of both engines. With the 9000.00 option price of the cummins I could never make my money back over the hemi. I tow 8800# TT with another 1500 in the bed of the truck. Fuel mileage and longevity were all taken into account. I have over 50,000 towing miles now and don't regret my decision. Everyone's truck needs are different. If I were towing a lot heavier I would have gotten the cummins. Of course if a guy just wants the diesel there is nothing wrong with that either.

I went diesel. I come from the Jeep world and 3000# isn't *****. I was always yearning for more. With the new house and property, I may get a wild hair and rent some heavy equipment, I may get a hot rod, will def get a bigger camper than the popup. Bacially I did 5 yrs of wanting and there isn't much that I can't tow now. I am getting the same gas milage as I did with the Jeeps and with the rolling hills and days of 50+ mph winds, even better. I just wish we would have gotten a truck/ camper combo instead of the dual Jeeps.

The $.30 + gal of diesel vs. gas, the 3 gal vs. 6qts of oil, adding DEF, the $6k difference on trade-ins, so far I am not kicking myself in the **** too bad.

In the end, I got a truck to be able to do what a truck does best.

I purchased a 6.4L 2500 CC after the demise of my 5.7L powered 2007 MegaCan.

I really liked the truck, especially after I did an intake, exhaust, programmer and a custom tune. It had a few other mods as well. My only gripe about the truck was when hauling heavy in hot weather, it just struggled way too much for my liking on 6% to 8% grades which was a problem. In almost every direction you can travel from here you'll eventually hit those steep grades. But I figured upgrading the rear gears would do the trick. Unfortunately, that black beast met a bad end.

My next truck purchase was informed by my experience with the 6.4L and I ended up with the CTD.

Cummins all the way for me. Been driving HD trucks for many years. Tried a gas HD Ram couple years ago and hated it, traded it in within the first year. Cost of ownership is a wash in the end so no reason not to go with the diesel for me.
I will say the new 8 speed transmission should give the gas truck a boost but I am sure a 8-10 speed diesel transmission is on the horizon.

I went with the 6.4/8spd. I can't justify the additional expense of a CTD. i don't haul enough to make it a sound fiscal idea.

Hows the mpgs with the 8speed?
Well, I only have 850 miles on it but im averaging 15mph, mixed driving.
I know if I drive mostly highway, I'll average 17.
The first 3 ygear are pretty low so city driving impacts mileage.

I just broke 1000 miles with mine and it's averaging around the same as Barncat.

All my 2500s are gassers and once the new can comes out I'll get a gasser again. I tied a few times "diesel weight" and it did fine. Gas is $2.50 and diesel is $3.75 where I live

When I was regularly hauling 4000 lbs in the bed or towing a 13,000 lb. boat trailer I wanted the diesel torque. It enabled me to pass slow moving tractor trailer rigs on grades and the exhaust brake is fantastic when going down steep grades and maintaining control.

No that I am not hauling or towing those kinds of loads I am going to sell the 2500 diesel and buy a 1500 gas pickup (with a large fuel tank).

Dang if these 8speed 6.4s average 15 mixed and could get 17-18 highway it may be worth switching.

I'm getting 11-12 mixed and lucky to get 15 highway with my 2016 6.4

I’ve personally had both (not in ram form) but can’t justify all the extra costs of the diesel when I’m only towing my camping setup 10-12 times a year. The diesel (2012 Powerstroke) hands down tows way better, but my old 2000 v10 gets me there and back, just slower.
Will be getting a 2019 or 2020 ram 2500 6.4 at some point.
If I could have kept the deleted newer diesel and still passed emissions I’d still have it. Live in an emissions required county. Dang it.

I had a 2016 ram 2500 with a 6.7 Cummins diesel. I loved that truck I’ll because of issues with the DEF system I sold it. I purchased a 2018 ram 2500 with a 6.4 hemi. So far, I am very well pleased with the truck. No, I do not get the mileage that I got with my diesel, 12/17 city highyway, gas; 16/21 city/highway diesel, Hello I don’t have to worry about the DEF system. I have yet to tow my 11,000 pounds give travel trailer with the new truck. I am sure I am going to miss the torque of the diesel.
