I just bought a Ram 2018 2500 diesel with 6k miles. Pulling my 8k lb. 5th wheel from Hatteras to Asheville it started to shutter almost like a limp mode. Let off the pedal a little and then eazed back into a little and it quit shuttering. This went on for a few miles going up I40 foot hill grades. Then the check engine light came on but all the gauges looked good so I kept on going for another 50 miles to the campground; it was 10 pm with buckets of rain falling. I got up the next morning check engine light was not on. Drove for 4 days are the Asheville area with no problems. Coming back I got about 250 miles heading home and the check engine light came on again and the shuttering started again. I found a dealer that would check it out at 7:30 am the next morning. Found a campground and spent the night. Next morning the check engine light was still on. After about a hour the mechanic called and asked if the fuel filters had been changed. The gauges read 100% when I picked up the truck from my Ford dealer The $300 receipt said it has 6 codes that showed up. So now I have new fuel filters but only towed camper about 30 miles to RV dealer for some warranty work. Driving another 200 miles no problem but not towing 8k lbs. my gut tells me that filters isn’t fixing the true problem and I just blew 300 bucks for a starting point. Has anyone else seen are heard of this kind of issue. Sorry for the long story
This service was performed by a Ram dealership

You have a warranty right? I would use it. Fuel filter change interval is 15,000 miles just like the oil so unless you got some very bad fuel changing them at 6000 was a waste.

What were the codes? That would be real important to know.

I guess I would be concerned as to why someone would spend all that money on a new truck and trade it in with only 6000 miles on it? (They had to take a heck of a loss on it)

The codes P0201 P0202 and threw P0206
These were the only ones listed on the service invoice. It also stated 6 fault codes maybe same codes showed up twice?

Those are all injector codes. It's odd you only had the shutter under load because I would think clogged or failing injectors would have issue no matter what. The only think I can think of is the filters were really clogged and it was fuel starved under load? That would have had to been some really bad contaminated fuel to cause that though.

Yes and no. Everything is covered up to 36K and then just power train out to 100K after that. However routine maintenance isn't covered (filters, tires etc) I don't think they would cover fixing the truck if bad fuel was put in there and caused damage though.

Those fuel filters aren't cheap, but many dyi video's on swapping them, fairly easy to do. Of course dealers will run up bill when they can, or should I say when people let them. You might want to put in an additive and run the tank super low. You might have got some bad diesel out on the road, it happens. Did you only fuel up at top tier places?
