At my last oil change (Monday, 44K on OD), the dealership informed me both differentials needed a fluid change (contaminated) as well as the transfer case fluid. Is there a recommended brand fluid to use on the differentials? The transfer case is ATF+4 which has pretty strict specifications, so from what I've read, any ATF+4 licenced oil should be fine to use. Does anyone know how much the diffs and transfer case take?

on the move..

I know Amsoil is pretty popular for a good engine oil, so I was assuming their gear oil would be a good choice.

Amsoil is top notch, my father is a dealer and we use all their products in every vehicle without any problems. At 44k that sounds a little soon to be changing out those fluids? Not saying they are wrong but dealerships around here like to add service where it isn't necessary to make more money.

Front diff takes just under 2 quarts. Rear diff is like 2.2 (you'll need 3 quarts). The transfer case needs under 2 as well. You may want to check about your transfer case though as certain ones need special fluid which only the special mopar stuff meets spec.

I kind of thought the same, the owners manual states around 48K to inspect and change if used for certain situations. Of course I don't fall into any of those situations.

The manual just says ATF+4 transmission fluid, and from the reading I've done, Chrysler has some pretty strict qualifications to carry the ATF+4 license. I might just stick with the Mopar fluid though for the transfer case. Thanks for the quantities though.

ATF+4 is all the same if a licensed brand is used. Go to Walmart and get the supertech brand and save the money.

I am changing my diffs this weekend. I'm using royal purple. Ordered it online to pick up at advance auto by my house. Used a coupon code from retailmenot to sweeten the deal!

No, the transfer case uses ATF+4 transmission fluid, the front diff uses 75W90 gear oil, and rear uses 75W140.

I plan on doing my diffs soon too. The Royal Purple site says you don't need to add additional friction modifier to their oil for limited slip/anti-spin diffs. Has anyone verified this through experience? Do you think adding the Mopar friction modifier could degrade the oil or cause any damage to the clutches?

I've read on other forums that royal purple includes friction modifier in their oil but I couldn't tell you 100% if that is true. You can always change the oil and try it without the friction modifier, you will know if it needs it when you start to turn from a stop and you feel the rearend shutter or shake until you are straightened up. I would say the modifier wouldn't damage the clutches or dilute the oil.
