So, if I understand correctly, my 2wd 1500 has only one (rear) differential, correct?

It has 60,000 miles on it (I bought it at that mileage) and have no idea if the fluid has ever been changed.

It appears that I have the 3.92 axle, and my research further leads me to (correct me if I'm wrong) that needing 75w140 fluid, correct? And I think it calls for 3 quarts?

If I am correct in all this, what would you recommend for my fluid change? Do I need to use the recommended 5 oz limited slip additive?

It appears that the 2wd 1500 with 3.92 axle is sort of rare?

I wouldn't really call the 2X4's with 3.92s as rare, every 8 speed R/T has them, and alot of guys who order a truck order them with 3.92's,admittedly the 3.21's are more common, but i wouldn't put the trucks with 3.92's in the rare catagory.
Both Redline and Amsoil make decent diff fluids

Ah, thought I read that here about rarity. OK, so another dumb question - are all 3.92s Limited Slip? If not, how would I know if mine is and if I need to add that special 5 ounces of limited slip additive?

Not all 3.92's are limited slip, most are,but not all.The additive won't hurt an open/non limited slip diff,it's just as easy to use diff fluid that already has the additive though. If your checking out diff fluids, just make sure they list the fluid as having the additive

OK - I found the Mopar stuff at a great price (around $18 a quart) and would have to get the additive. However, I'm open to already added stuff - I see Valvoline, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Mobil 1, Redline, etc. and all seem pretty highly rated.

Enter your VIN at this site, then scroll about halfway down, between transmission and engine.
Or search differential with control F.

Any of those are decent diff fluids, pick the one that's easiest to get

Thank you - here's what it says:

3.92 REAR AXLE RATIO
ANTI-SPIN DIFFERENTIAL REAR AXLE

So, I assume that means I DO have the Limited Slip Differential?

I think technically you're supposed to fill it to just below the fill hole (about a pinky nail distance), but most fill it until fluid just starts to weep from the filler. You may want to verify that for sure. I fill mine until it weeps.

Regardless, don't attempt to drain it until you've verified that you can remove the fill plug first.

I've heard this is a messy job and often people have a mechanic do it - is that the case, or could this be a DIY job?
If you can't change diff fluids on your own,you better hand in your man card :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh:
I'm pretty sure if you google diff fluid change, you'll find a bunch of video's on you tube showing how to do it
